Diabetes and alchohal ??????

ok so im 14 years old , and on friday i am going to a party , i hav ebeen to partys before but never like this my friends say were gonna do alot of drinking and itl be a grreat time i have drank before ( a beer or two ) but never like we plan to at this party so my questions is i am diabetic type 1 , how will drinking affect me differently than my friends , is it that big of a deal for diabetics to drink ?????

I am not being a moral judge about drinking alcohol at 14, we've all done it, just don't overdo it. In any case you aught to know about it anyway.
Beer is a food and contains carbohydrate in various forms. Some beers have more than others, pilsner type lagers have the lowest level of carbs around 10g per 500ml (I would stick with these types). For the 'more experienced' drinkers spirits contain no carbohydrates at all (hooray). Mixed with diet soda you still have a drink with zero carbs.
I will repeat that you should not go overboard the real problem is getting drunk and loosing control of yourself and your blood sugar levels. Check your blood before you go out and aim for a sensible glucose level check it again a couple of time in the evening and don't over administrate on insulin, a hypo when your drunk is a serious issue.
Have a good time and stay safe.

If you have diabetes and take insulin shots or oral diabetes pills, you risk low blood sugar when you drink alcohol. To protect yourself, never drink on an empty stomach. Plan to have your drink with a meal or after eating a snack. How does alcohol add to your chances of having low blood sugar? It has to do with your liver. Normally, when your blood sugar level starts to drop, your liver steps in. It goes to work changing stored carbohydrate into glucose. Then it sends the glucose out into the blood, which helps you avoid or slow down a low blood sugar reaction. However, when alcohol enters your system, this changes. Alcohol is a toxin. Your body reacts to alcohol like a poison. The liver wants to clear it from the blood quickly. In fact, the liver won't put out glucose again until it has taken care of the alcohol. If your blood glucose level is falling, you can quickly wind up with very low blood sugar. This is why drinking as little as 2 ounces of alcohol (about 2 drinks) on an empty stomach can lead to very low blood sugar.

When you mix alcohol and exercise, you increase the risk of going low. This can happen because exercise helps lower your blood sugar levels.

If you have nerve damage from diabetes in your arms or legs, drinking can make it worse. Alcohol is toxic to nerves. Drinking can increase the pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms found with nerve damage. Some studies show that even regular light drinking (less than two drinks per week) can bring on nerve damage.

My maternal grandfather was diabetic and an alcoholic. In 2004, he died at the age of 72 from a critical heart attack.

In a nutshell, alcohol destroys your liver and brain, and when you're a type 1 diabetic, you need to use your liver more than the average people. As for the brain, you need to use it, duh! What's the point of living if you have a damaged brain that doesn't even work? Anyway, If you want to learn more details, just go on Wikipedia and do some research, or open up an AP Biology textbook.

Let me explain how the liver is involved with diabetes and alcohol. Alcohol has carbs, which of course means your blood sugar will rise without insulin. Alcohol is like a poison to your body and its the livers job to get rid of that poison. Its also the livers job to release some of the sugar it stores in case you have a low..the liver can only do one job at a time though...and its first priority is to get rid of the alcohol..you get drunk, your blood sugar drops too low (from not eating....who eats a real meal when you got a lot of alcohol to drink?), and you pass out...what then? your liver isnt going to help you...are your drunk friends gonna help you? are they gonna think you're passed out from too much alcohol and just leave you be until you come around when its actually a low blood sugar you're passed out from? And YES it is a big deal for diabetics to drink...its dangerous

If you drink until you puke, which seems to be the plan, how will you keep any food down? You might not be able to keep any food down the next day either. Maybe you should wear a medical alert bracelet if you have one, in case you end up needing medical attention. It sounds like a tough decision for you. Good luck with it.

It is not a big deal how much you drink, its all in what type of alchohal you drink, i know a guy that drinks kokanee beer and hes type one diabetic and hes never had a problem, but you wanna stay away from really sugary alchohas..and always remember to take you meds and emergency stuff with you

DON'T drink alcohol if you're diabetic...(especially a type one..) you can get too many carbs and go into a coma, plus it will make you barf a lot and spend way too much time in the bathroom..(and besides you're way too young to drink)

It's a really really bad idea. It's going to mess with your sugars big time and if you get drunk you probably won't be able to take care of yourself. Insulin shots when you're drunk are dang near impossible. You won't be able to do anything correctly! I wouldn't chance it, dude.

First you are 14, and souldn't be drinking; however, a type1 diabetic can still drink in moderation. But only if it is built into your diet plan.

(Do not try to just bolus more insulin so you can drink!)

Don't do it its dangerous, if you drink too much, which it sounds like you guys will be doing... and you pass out which is very likely, while you are unconscious your blood sugar levels will drop extremely low = you might never wake up..... don't do it.

I have a friend who has diabetes, she can drink and she does alot, you just become less aware of your sugar levels so it can be every bad. JUst be so careful, don't go crazy but have fun.

my rule of thumb is if you can't spell alcohol you damn sure shouldn't be drinking it. But on a serious note it is very dangerous for you to drink.

dude, you are 14. and a diabetic!? two very good reasons not to drink.

Your sugar will go up, and that night or next day your sugar will drop low. Don't drink

ok, im 13 my self
14 is to young to be drinking
my mom would explode if she found out i was drinking

alcohol is loaded with sugar. do the math.
