Diabetes: High blood sugar in the morning only? |
I get my highest reading (175) in the morning before I eat. I'm at 107 before dinner. I've tried eating a snack before bed and not eating a snack. Does anyone have any specific suggestions? I'm on metformin only. I'm following the diet my dietician gave me and tread millin' it a half an hour a night. Losing weight isn't so much an option for me, as I'm not overweight. I'm just genetically blessed. ;) Look up 'dawn phenomenon'. This is when the liver dumps more sugar into your blood just before waking, giving you a higher number. So snacking at night (unless it is in the middle of the night) won't affect that morning number. You could try a couple of things - first, take your BG before you get up and start moving. My mom has noticed that if she takes her BG before she gets out of bed, it is normal but after she gets up, showers, makes tea, etc. the number is higher. Second, try waking up earlier and testing for a week. You could see when the dumping (if it is in fact dumping). This would help if you are thinking of changing your medication, as it is a temporary change in the number and not one you can control. i would say no snack before bed, but as you said you have tried this and said you are getting the same reading, and if you are not on insulin then you can't adjust the doses...i would have to say the only option here would be to cut down on your dinner...maybe eat a few less carbs for dinner and keep everything else the same. i have this problem right now, but i am on insulin so i'm having to play with my doses and i'm waking up in the middle of the night with lows if i increase it, and if i dont adjust it at night then i wake up with highs....those of us that are "genetically blessed" have issues to deal with! haha good luck to you! It's natural to be high in the morning. Since from dinner to breakfast your body goes through the least amount of activity of the day. Since you body does not consume blood glucose its stored in your blood and also converted to fat. Make sure you are not eating at night without knowing it. Some people get up and eat while half asleep without knowing it. Usually there are tell tale signs like dishes or a mess in the kitchen, but if you live with someone else, then you might think it is them. This is due to cortisol secretion in the early morning ..if you have an insulin pump you might want to consider increasing the basal in the early hours before you wake...talk to your endo I am a diabetic, I keep away from sugar and carbs. I eat smaller meals, less carbs. In the last year I have lost 66 lbs. Watch what you eat Depends on what medication you are on, if any. Probably best to talk to your doctor. |
