Would a diabetes support group be effective in assisting diabetic patients to be in better control .?

surely it would help you.

That would depend on what type of person you are when it comes to groups and interactions, as well as the group's education level and the group dynamics.

If you are only looking for better control, you might want to consider talking with your doctor about making an appointment with a Nutritionist in your area. A Nutritionist can work with you on the different carb types, the way the body uses the different carbs, insulin to carb requirements, meal portions and other things.

Personally, I've had diabetes for 32 years now and have been on the pump for over 15 years. After being on the pump for 5 years I went to a local support group for people on pumps, but I found the group was not a good fit for me because the people in the group were thinking about going on the pump or were just put on the pump. I could give lots of pesonal experience-related advice to group members, but the group did not provide me with an opportunity learn due to the different experience levels.

If you are newly diagnosed I would recommend checking out the various groups in your area. Your local Endocrinologists may be aware of some groups, you can check with your local hospitals to see if they have any, as well as online.

Personally, I have never participated in a group to obtain "better control", but more for higher knowledge (which could result in better control).

It sounds good but to me in the end a person is going to do what they want whether they are in a group or not. It's not like AA or anything. No one is responsible if you are eating what you're not suppose to be. The only good I see is that they have others to talk to that know what you're going through. Just make sure your Diabetics Group friend doesn't try to be your doctor. When you're a diabetic everyone wants to tell you what to do with your health.

hi you
yes it would and not only would be and along with helping you in more effective in assisting the diabetic in would also give you a more understanding of the way in which it affect many people in coping with diabetes the Irish diabetes federation has its own parents support group there web site is diabetes.ie if you would like to make contact or find out more

Absolutely! Besides support from other diabetics, it helps to know that there are other people in the same boat as you, like me. Take care.

Yes, they say so. I am diabetic and the support groups are too far from where I live so I can't afford to attend on my fixed income.

I've made some of my very best friends in diabetes support groups.
You exchange ideas and yes, it does help you with sugars and so much more.

Yes, very much so. They will be able to see how not taking care of diabetes has effected other people.
