Can diabetes effect a girl's menstruation cycle?

I've been having symptons of diabetes, and we are thinking of planning a trip to the doctor. I was just wondering if diabetes can effect a girl's menstruation cycle? I have not had sex recently and my period is a week late today. Keep in mind that I have never been this late before. The latest I have ever been since my period has gotten on a regular cycle was maybe two days. Thanks for your help!

I don't think there is definite link between diabetes and delayed menses. However it is better that you see a gynecologist.

Here are some of the common causes of deleayed menses:
- Pregnancy.
- Breast feeding.
- Constitutional/normal delay. At the time of puberty ot before menopause.
- Hormonal cause.
- Causes in ovary.
- Emotional causes.
- Medicines.
- Chromosomal causes.
- Others. Excessive exercise, severe dieting, especially crash dieting, eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, severe illness, or sickness for an extended period of time can cause anovulation.

Here are some of the symptoms:

1. Loosing weight suddenly.
2. Frequent urination.
3. Always very thirsty.
4. Dire need to eat, always hungry.
5. Blurred vision.
6. Itching of the skin.
7. Numbness in extremities (arms & lags).
8. Slow healing of wounds.
9. Vaginal yeast infection.
10. Fatigue.
11. Irritability and changes in ones mood.

These are only indicative and not conclusive. Sometimes diabetes can be without symptoms also. You will be said to have diabetes if you blood/sugar sugar level remains high normally. There are many free kits available that can help you figure out whether you have diabetes or not. Don't go by symptoms alone, use the free kits to make sure. Of course final confirmation should be done by a medical practitioner.

Its more the other way around ... the menses effects the diabetes. Right before your period when the hormone levels rise your blood sugar falls. You said you havent had sex recently .. well if your last time was about 2 or 3 weeks ago .. there a good chance that it could be pregnancy. Though the cycles of all women vary, the one constant is that the egg is released and 2 weeks later your start your period. That doesn't change from woman to woman ... If you had se about 2 weeks prior to the date you should have started .. theres is that possibility.

absolutely, because mensus is very tied to the stresses of the body, including diabetes, or stress, or hormone imbalances in general. You should see your doctor and see if this is true. A family member of mine has always had issues with her periods in regards to her diabetes and the kind of blood sugars she's been having.

You may have other things going on, like an underactive thyroid. I would most definitely go to a doctor and see what's going on.
