Diabetes... would you ever have to go to the hospital for having like, an extream low? |
if so, what would be like the treatment for it, or what would they have to do before you could leave the hospital and go home. Hospitalization isn't usually necessary. If you're not unconscious, you can be given glucose or practically anything sweet. If you are unconscious you can be given an injection of glucagon. Both should be done ONLY after a reliable blood glucose test. Any qualified person can do the job. Hospitalization would only be necessary if the unconsciousness were severe and prolonged (coma) A low episode can be very dangerous if the person lets it go too long. When I went, they did not try to give me anything by mouth. The gave me glucagon injection, about 10 or 15 min. later, they gave me peanut butter and graham crackers. After they were sure I was stable, they let me go home. It was the only time I ever had to go to the hospital for a low, it hit so fast, I never saw it coming. I was close to a coma. It was weird because it happened not too long after I was diagnosed as diabetic...before that I had spent most of my life being severely hypoglycemic and never got that low before. Under some circumstances yes you would have to go to the hospital if you cannot treat it yourself at home or the home treatment doesn't work. As far as what they would do before letting you leave the hospital is to make sure your sugar numbers are in the area they should be and that you can maintain them for awhile there and not go back too low. Actually, having high blood sugar can cause one to act drunk. There will, also, be a sweet, fruity scent to the breath. Low blood sugar causes the shakes, sweating, and eventually, can lead to a coma and, possibly, death. In the short time, the patient is given sugar, either via IV or, in exteme instances (do NOT try this at home, you must be a licensed professional) a medical professional could administer say, an M&M to the rectal cavity. EEEWWWW, I know but, if it's going to save my life... shove away. In the long term, in the hospital, I would hope that the doctors could find out the underlying factors that led to the low blood sugar, in the first place. If you have a low reading you start to act drunk with slurring not knowing where you are the whole bit that is when you drink some oj with 2 tablespoons of juice and keep drinking til sugar comes up. This just happened to my dad a2 months ago, we did take him to the hospital also. Low sugars can lead to diabetic coma depending on how low it goes. hi you YES!!!!!!!! If you are below 30 I wold seek medical help immediately after you swig down that juice. It is very common to pass out or even go into a comma if your blood sugar is really low!!! Also if your BG drops rapidly!!! if u went to the hospital because of a low blood sugar they wolud probley give you glocon to raise it yes...you could go into a coma ....need to get some orange juice or cocoa cola into you system or some glucose gel..mini tube of cake icing to put under tongue yes.... my lowest was 23.... they gave me liquid glucose and i came back.... |
