Diabetes and Carbs?

i may have pre diabetes i will find out in one month and the Dr. told me to avoid carbs and did not think at the time but does this mean i cant have fruit and oatmeal cause i try to eat like 3 to 5 pieces of fruit a day and oatmeal in the morning and salads at night can i still have these and just cut out simple carbs or should i cut back on these also

Fruit does have carbs and sugar and will raise blood sugar levels..sometimes a lot. Bananas and pineapple are at the top of the list to avoid. Eat only very small portions and only a few times a week. Eat in moderation. Oatmeal has carbs, but they are good carbs. It also has a lot of fiber, which is very good ...fiber helps keep blood sugars from being released into the blood stream too fast, helps you feel full, and helps prevent constipation. Eat the kind you have to cook, the instant kind has too much of the nutrition processed out of it. Stay away from white bread, and things made with white flour, including pastas. No white rice or white potatoes. Stay away from fried, breaded, and fatty foods. You can eat lean cuts of beef, white meat chicken and turkey and pork. Most veggies are ok, especially if you are eating salads. Watch the carbs in your diet, learn about the good ones and bad ones. Get a copy of South Beach diet and it will make everything extremely simple for you. ($12.00 paperback at Walmart)
Why do you have to wait a month before you find out??? Most doctors can find out in a day, and those that have labs in the office can find out in a few hours.

OK - what he should have told you is what kind of carbs to avoid. You need to keep your Oatmeal. Moderate amounts of fruit are also healthy, put them in the oatmeal. Use whole grain carbs such as whole grain breads when you eat them. Controlling pre-diabetes and well as diabetes does not mean skipping carbs. It means selecting foods with a low glycemic index. High gylcemic index foods are pure sugar carbs like candy, chocolate, white sugar, sugar containing sodas and other foods with refined sugar.

Keep in mind the body runs on carbs so you only need to be careful about the kind of carbs you choose. Avoid too much fruit juice though because that has lots of sugar. Choose vegetable juice, increase your intake of vegetables, except maybe potatoes since they have a high gylcemic index. Add fiber. Don't cut all the carbs because that will not sustain you.

Check out the American Diabetic Association home page as well. Leave out simple carbs and keep eating healthy.

Fruit and veggies don't count other than ones really high in carbs such as potatoes. Oatmeal is ok as long as you watch serving size, sugars, and don't eat it for every meal. It is better than cereal. Mainly watch simple carbs from crackers, cookies, chips, pastas, etc. Stick to whole wheat carbs/ complex carbs, but still watch the daily amount that it adds up to. Also, be careful of salad dressings, etc.

My husband had type 2 diabetes and basically we changed the way he ate. You can continue to eat your fruits and veggies, if you want rice eat brown rice. You should bake or grill your meats instead of frying them and stay away from fast food as much as possible. Drink lots of fluids (water and juice that's 100%) and be sure to exercise. As far as oatmeal is concerned if you want to eat it have a smaller portion until your doctor tells you otherwise. Some people become diabetic b/c of weight so if you can loss some weight that may be helpful as well. If you like salad eat romaine lettuce or field greens like baby spinach (iceberg lettuce really doesn't have a lot of nutritional value) and avoid creamy dressings. Try olive oil and lime with a small amount of salt and pepper or other seasonings that you like. Overall speak with your doctor about the foods you should eat b/c you may be restricted from eating some foods now but once your sugar levels are normal you may be able to eat them again but in moderation. My husband has been diabetes free for the past 3 yrs so it is possible to get your body under control.

http://www.mendosa.com for the original Glycemic Index of foods. It has been updated recently with Glycemic Loads of foods as well.

You could also get one of the handy dandy pocket books of nutritional data on foods. Atkins has one out that is excellent. It lists the major nutrients of foods.

Learning to count grams of carb is a sharp learning curve. But it does get easier when you have studied how the various foods make you feel and how much some of them spike glucose numbers.

I do not have oatmeal and lots of fruits like the soft sweet ones. I usually limit my fruits to berries like blueberries and black raspberries and green apples like Grannie Smith.

Remember some of the things we commonly call vegetables are actually fruits like Tomatoes, Peppers and others like that. If it grows on a plant and has a blossom that the item develops from, it is actually a fruit.

I have eliminated most grain products, most soft sweet fruits, all starchy veggies, most milk products.

I eat 3 oz cooked serving of a meat and a huge green salad with tomatoes and some other good garden stuff with real dressing on the side. The fats in the dressing will curtail hunger!

breakfast I have bacon and eggs! not cereals!

fruit and oatmeal are carbs too. :( Definately cut back or avoid if Dr says to.
