Diabetes and alcohol?!? |
Can someone with diabetes drink alcohol? Diabetics can drink alchohol most certainly! It is a hit and miss game thoguh, and most stray from alchohol just to be on the safe side. All alchohol will spike a diabetic's blood glucose reading and them (up to twelve hours later) drop it severely. Alcohol is pure "sugar alcohols" which immediately go into your bloodstream and alter your glucose levels. I'm a diabetic for over 20 years, when I am really on track, I can have, with dinner consisting mainly of PROTEIN, I will have a little red wine or white wine without a major spike in my glucose level. If you're talking about going out with the girls and drinking the night away...yes, you can do it but be prepared to be deathly sick at the end of the night from a sugar hi and then low and a wicked headache and I don't mean hangover..so, I have come to the conclusion it is not worth it to be sick for days to have a little fun drinking. Besides, my body is so sensitive to sugar, a half glass of wine and I'm flying high...... I've been diabetic since i was 9..... In Moderation just like you can eat chocolate just keep your exchanges in balance. As an diabetic knows all foods turn to sugar. You know your body. Monitor your blood sugars and act accordingly. As you know it is a difficult to understand and everyone seems to think they are experts, you know you best. not very much like only one ounce with or after a meal. My neighbor's grandson died from a severe low blood sugar episode following a night of drinking. He thought he had the flu but he actually was suffering from keto acidosis which can be fatal if ignored. His room mate found him dead. He failed to recognize the symptoms and get to the ER. He did not want to take care of himself like he should and wanted to party like everyone else....he was only 19. They can, but it's not good for them. They can really harm themselves even more than the diabetes just by itself does. It sends sugar levels through the roof! Usually a weekend of partying for a diabetic will lead to a trip to the hospital. Sometimes...a younger diabetic drinker can make it more than a few weekends. I used to know an 18 year old guy that did this once a month. (ended up in the hospital) I think it's...not very smart. LOL. No. Maybe one in a blue moon. Beer has a lot of carbs and wine coolers and other alcohols have a lot of sugar in them. Your blood sugar would go very high, and later drop low. Drinking causes both of these problems. I tried when I was first diagnosed, and did not care about my disease. My blood sugar would drop dangerously low Its not a good idea. I had a good friend in high school that used to drink and he was diabetic. Thing was, he used to drink all the time and it never bothered him. One night, it did, he got drunk one night and never woke up. It was very tragic and I wouldn't want to put anyone through that pain. it's best if they don't. alcohol turns into sugar. if you have diabetes your doctor should have told you if you can or not, but as a general rule i'd say no don't drink it could screw up your blood sugar really bad. Once a month won't kill you. They can but it is a really bad idea! Alcohol is absorbed into the system as a sugar. It will really mess up a diabetics blood sugar. Noooo! yes, but not a whole bunch and the more alcohol in the product, the "worse" for them its not recommended, but as long as they do it in moderation and make sure that their insulin/ blood sugar is right maybe -- but expect to be sick later i wouldn't. alcohol doesn't mix well with medication. I wouldn't. Frutiy drinks have tons of sugar. Consult your doctor though, before you make any decisions. My Dad is diabetic and he enjoys his spirits. Quite frequently in fact. Too much sugar, it'd be incredibly stupid to do so. |
