What to do if you have type 2 diabetes & a stomach bug (vomiting_? |
HELP. My husband has type 2 diabetes....and for the first time since he was diagnosed, has an awful stomach bug...throwing up/diarreha..the works. needless to say, he hasn't eaten b/c he can't keep anything down. I'm worried about his sugar level. any advice??? what should we do? As a type 1 I can say that illness, infections and stress all raise blood sugars. When I an vomiting etc..I still need my insulin and to test more frequently. Consulting his doctor is the best thing you can do to be sure. As a person who has Type 2 Diabetes..when I am sick I keep a glass of water with 1/2 tsp of sugar in it. To help keep the sugar levels up. ...also Gatorade is good as well to help keep the electrolytes levels up so that dehydration doesn't take over. Ginger Ale diluted with 1/2 water is another and helps keep the stomach settled. Hope that answers your question. I don't know for sure what type 2's do, but I have type 1 and even if I am sick I am supposed to give my long acting insulin as usual and fast acting only if needed. I would call your husbands doctor as soon as you can, or call your ER or Ask A Nurse hotline for advice in the meantime. Have his blood sugars been going high or low while sick? this is a sign of gastroparesis . you can check this article for all the information on gastroparesis. |
