Is muscle building protein drink safe for diabetes patient? I like protein shakes that have very little sugar like ISOPURE. Whey protein is safe. Drinks not as much because they purposely are loaded with sugar (while optimum for muscle building, not a great idea for diabetics). While too much protein can be an issue with some diabetics, eventually you have to eat something. You cant eat a lot of carbs or fat either but eventually you need calories. Using healthy sources of each is your bet way to go. The main thing you should check is your carbs. Depending on the diabetes, high protein can damage the kidneys. Check with your Dr. The best bet is milk, high protein (easily absorbed too) lower in carbs and fat. Bet do even that in moderation. Some of them have a lot of sugar, which will cause hyperglycemia.
