Diabetes - is it normal for your sugars to go up 10-15 minutes after exercise?

Yeah, this will happen sometimes to some diabetics. Usually it's because when you exercise your blood sugar starts to go down , and the liver, thinking the blood sugar is going too low, will send out more sugar into the blood. (normally exercise makes the blood sugar lower) It also happens in some diabetics if they don't eat when they are supposed to. However, if they don't eat soon, the blood sugar will still drop low.

Yes...I'm in the process of trying to fine-tune what I need to do around exercise. So far the best thing for me is to start my temporary reduced basal about 30-45 min. before I start exercising, and stop the temp basal about 15 min. before I stop. Then I check myself 1 hr. afterwards and give myself a correction bolus if needed. My diabetes educator says its probably the endorphins (hormones) that kick in while exercising that are causing the spike afterwards.

Are we talking about a type 1 diabetic, or a type 2?

My 2 year old daughter is a type 1 diabetic. Her sugars usually go down fast when she exercises. But if the exercise is light and she gets really excited ... like sometimes when something is new and extremely fun ... the excitement will make her blood sugars go up instead of down. It'll happen fast, and they'll go really high

Or, if your blood sugar was high to begin with and you're putting of ketones, then your sugars will go up with exercise. But I don't know if that makes them go up that fast, or if it takes more time.

And if you go low your liver should release sugar to make it go up. I've seen that in my daughter ... but she seems to go higher later on, not that quickly. She still needs juice or some form of sugar to bring her out of that low quickly, the liver doesn't seem to react that fast.

sometimes what you have ate before you begin exercising may spike giving you a high reading.. When my blood sugar is high my blood sugar usually goes down.. if my blood sugar is spiking it may continue to rise for a while... don't quit exercising your blood sugar will eventually will get lower... Exercising is the best medicine for reducing insulin resistance in both type one and two diabetics... good luck i can't stress how important exercise link is to good control of your diabetes.............

Exercise always makes my glucose levels go up. If I am in situation where I can't eat for some reason, I keep moving so I don't crash too hard. But when I stop I will definitely need food and drink to stop the crashing.

I know that if I exercise just before meal time, I won't crash. Even tho my glucose reading is higher, I plan in the 10% that is exercise enduced and ignore the pre meal/post exercise reading.
