How long do you think it will take to find a cure for type 1 diabetes?

because i really want to join the marines!

I have a tendancy to agree with the others that they already have a cure, but just aren't willing to release it to the public because of the $$$$ they make off of us who can not survive without our insulin and our pills to keep us running. However, the islet cells they have transplanted are inspiring and even better the ones that they can take from our own bodies and "reprogram" them to make insulin! The fact that we know this is hopefull and I think its possible in the next 15-20 years or less that we'll either have a cure or atleast this disease will be much more manageable as well as the cures and treatments of its nasty side effects. Hang in there your not alone! : )

Researchers are a step closer to a cure for type 1 diabetes after the successful transplantation of insulin-producing cells into eight patients.

The breakthrough gives hope to the 140,000 Australians, who survive on daily insulin injections.

Wayne Hawthorne, from the national pancreas and islet transplant unit at Westmead Hospital, said the experimental procedure might soon be a real option for everyone with type 1 diabetes, including children.

Scientists transplanted the insulin-producing islet cells from a donor pancreas into the patients' livers, where they began to produce insulin.

So there is hope...not sure when though! but things are looking good for your future!

You should live so long. The problem we have in this country is that research is done by drug companies. Their priority is to make money, not necessarily to relieve suffering. They would rather develop a pill you take for the rest of your life, they make a lot more money that way. They make a lot just on insulin!

Sorry you have diabetes, but it's a lifelong thing. So take good care of yourself.

Never. It is not cost effective to cure diseases such as diabetes. They love to sell test strips and insulin. Sorry to be so negative. To get money for NASA they said they would find a cure for diabetes . And that was 40 yrs. ago.

Not in our lifetimes...it's been "right around the corner" for at least as long as I've had it, and that's been 24 years. Not to be a pessimist, but they don't even know the cause of it yet, let alone a cure. Sorry about the military, that was once my plan, too!

Nobody's hiding a cure. With life comes suffering and challenges. I firmly believe we'll have it in our lifetime. In fact, I'll go as far as to say I think we're on the cusp.
