How long does it take to get diabetes?

I was just wondering how long it takes to get diabetes type 2.

You can develop type 2 diabetes over the period of a year or two. Many of the ones I have met in my diabetes ed classes had sypmtoms for 6 months to a year before they were diagnosed. I had sypmtoms for about 18 months before I finally went to the doctor.

It can take between 1 and 2 years depending on your body's genetics and glucose level.

In some cases you can get it at birth, some as grandparents in retirement villages.

It depends on who you are and how you treat your body. If you have symptoms see your doctor and let them know.

Also tell your family, they can and will help you out.

Some people can have the symptoms for years without being diagnosed with diabetes.

Trying looking at diabetic forums on the net, put your question in and wait for a response, alternatively ask a diabetic friend that you or someone in your family knows.

Cya.

Type 2 diabetes can be diagnosed at any age. Many years ago it was unheard of in children, and now it is more and more common. Risk factors are inactive lifestyle, obesity, family history, medications (especially steroids and some of the mental health meds can cause diabetes), and age (the older you are, the higher the risk). Type 2 can develop over many years, or very quickly. Lifestyle changes can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Good luck!

1-2 years . depends on your glucose in your body

The mean age at diagnosis decreased from 52.0 to 46.0 years (P <.05). Racial and ethnic differences in age at diagnosis found in 1988 to 1994 are no longer found in 1999 to 2000.

CONCLUSIONS The age at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus has decreased with time. This finding likely represents a combination of changing diagnostic criteria, improved physician recognition of diabetes, and increased public awareness. Younger age at diagnosis may also reflect a true population trend of earlier onset of type 2 diabetes.

The average age for type 1 diabetes is under 20 yrs of age.I think 14 is the exact figure. For type 2 the avg. is 52 yrs. of age.Now it has dropped to 46 yrs. of age.

Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes. Whereas Type 1 Diabetes was characterized by the onset in young persons (average age at diagnosis = 14),

METHODS We undertook a secondary analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999鈥?000 and NHANES III (1988鈥?994). Both surveys are stratified, multistage probability samples targeting the civilian, noninstitutionalized US population, which allow calculation of population estimates. We included adults aged 20 years and older. We compared self-reported age at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes between the 2 survey periods.

RESULTS The mean age at diagnosis decreased from 52.0 to 46.0 years (P <.05). Racial and ethnic differences in age at diagnosis found in 1988 to 1994 are no longer found in 1999 to 2000.
