Can you lead a normal life with diabetes ?

Can you do everything that everyone else does, vacation, get married, exercise, etc, if you have diabetes ?
Does anyone have any bad or good experiences ?

Oh yeah! You can still lead a perfectly normal life! :) It might be a pain in the butt remembering to take your pills or insulin when you're supposed to be on vacation, but you get used to it. You just have to watch your carbs, sugar, and alcohol intake, and the rest should be cake! Exercise is good for you if your sugars are high. It helps to lower them. You need to be careful when and if ou have children, but your OB/Gyn will take cover that with you! Be careful that you are specific if you go to restaurants, though. Sometimes I'll ask for a diet drink and they'll bring me a regular and stuff like that. Don't worry too much about it, or let it get you down, and stay close with your doctor Life is yours and your diabetes doesn't have to dictate who you are! Have fun and the best of luck to ya!

You can lead a relatively normal life, but there are some limitations and you have to take extra precautions before starting a lot of activities.

Where I come from (Faroe Islands) and many other European countries, you can't legally be a diver, a bus driver, pilot or any other job that put a lot of lives at risk. And you have to get a special evaluation from your doctor if you want to get the drivers license, and you won't get the license if you suffer from sudden and unnoticed hypoglycaemic episodes. You also have to get your health evaluated every two years if you want to keep the drivers license.

You also have to have a special permit from your doctor if you want to travel by plane, that lists all your medications and accessories (blood glucose monitor, needles etc.) so you can take them inside the plane with you.

Also, treatment of different medical conditions is often a bit different for diabetics. Doctors often avoid operations, even if they are the easiest treatment because of reduced wound healing a lot of diabetics have. And where I live and many other European countries don't allow blood donations form diabetics, but some countries do allow it though.

Hello my friend,
Absolutely. You just have to develop some good habits around controlling your blood sugar.

Also, with exercise, always check your blood sugar before you exercise. The reason being that if it is to low it may go lower and if it is to high it could go higher.

I have experienced my blood sugar going up when I exercised, especially in the morning.

I have heard about other people having low blood sugar after exercising.

There is a great book called Dr. Bastien's Diabetes Solution. This book has been a life saver for me.

Dr. Bernstein has been a type l diabetic since he was around 9 or 10. He is now over 70 years old and is actively practicing medicine.

He found out how to control his blood sugar and became a doctor at the age of around 45.

When he was first diagnosed, his life expectancy was less than 40 years of age.

Even though he is a type l diabetic, the covers both type l & ll
diabetes in his book.

He even has a cook book now, with delicious recipes, that are easy to prepare.

I hope this helps.

YES!!! of course you can

I'm 15 and do everything a normal teenager does
i play sports
i hang out with my friends
i party

their is nothing you cant do

well except disappear off to some remote tribe with the peace core but o well

and you actually can give blood

Mr. Peachy I EAT GOBS OF CAKE MMMMMMMMMMM
and have no problems so :P

Of course you can why couldnt you?
all thats diferent is what you eat and when you eat plus medicine and checking bloodsugar and its not like it takes up your whole life. I have it my mother had it my grandma had it and so on. sometimes you dont even realize the people areound you have it. There are at lest 200 diabetics just in my little town (i checked) :) Bad experiences? the worst one i've had is feeling shaky and non concentrated during a math test. Or that time i had to go to the nurse during gym becasue i was too hungry.

Sure you can but please keep your sugar in check. Because it can lead to some very bad things.Ive had diabetes since 1992. I was hard headed and did not control it or my blood pressure and drank way to much. The end results were eye site half gone and Ive been on dialysis for 3 years since my kidneys failed. This not to scare you because if you take care of your self you can avoid these things. Good luck and God bless.

It is a life committment to misery.Nothing good comes out of having diabetes. We all face blindness , amputations, neuropathy. Even if we take care! So don't count on a normal life.
Sorry about the negative statements. Been sick a few days and taking it out in answers is quite childish.Sorry

Yes, totally! Just keep a balanced diet, start a family, take ajog every so often...I used to have type 2 a while ago and i was just living a perfectly normal life i did have some problems now and then but we got through it and i was still able to care my my children

yeah you can, my friends mom has diabetes and she dose any thing she wants to ,and my cousin has diabetes and she dose the same thing every won else dose, the only difference is you have to put incline in Ur body that's it your just the same as every won else.

Absolutely, I think the only thing you can't do is give blood. I have had diabetes for 4 years, not too long I guess, but I do everything the other kids do, however my levels aren't always the best, but I have a pump now! YAY!

i have diabetes and you can live your life the same way other people do. you just have to be aware of what your blood sugars are doing.

You can still do just about anything!

The only things you really need to avoid are concentrated sweets and alcohol.

Good luck to you!

YES! Learn to manage your disease and you will be able to do all that and more! Ask your doctor for information, suggestions on meeting with a dietitian, etc.

Of course you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can do practically anything. (Except eat gobs of cake).

yeah...it isn't that bad

my BFF has diabetes since a really young age, and she does MORE stuff than me. so yes.
