What are the chances of getting Diabetes? |
What are the chances of getting Diabetes if one of my grandparents had it? Statistically speaking, you have a greater chance than someone with no family history. 5-10% is your estimated chance of becoming a diabetic. A few things to know, is this grandparent type 1 or type 2? Have you had any issues with bloodsugars or unexplained weight loss? Extreme thirst? Little things like that would be warning signs. Do not ignore them. Your chances may greater (but not much) than a person with no family history. If one of your parents has it or gets it, then most likely you will too. Just watch what you eat, exercise and keep your weight off your middle. My daughter is hypo-glycemic (low blood sugar), diagnosed when she was 3. But in kids, this "pre-disposes" them to Diabetes 2. I was told then to watch her carbs, sugar and even fiber. The more of these she ate, the faster she could develop diabetes and eventually become insulin dependant. Just after she was diagnosed with hypo-glycemia, her grandmother was diagnosed with Diabetes 2, since then all members of her fathers family (siblings) has been diagnosed with diabetes 2. But none exercise, they smoke and drink too much and eat alot of fast food and sodas. How you eat and exercise can determine the likely hood of diabetes. well you got 80% chance to get this disease from your heredity. But you can reduce that change by controlling your intake and regular exercise. check out this site for how to control diabetes chance. http://diabetes-complications.blogspot.c... Depends...it could be hereditary or brought on by your diet. In my family, it seems to "skip" generations. Make an appt with your PCP and have some testing done, especially the glucose test. |
