Should i look at Glycemic load or glycemic index?gestational diabetes at 20 weeks?

Hi all,
I am 20 weeks pregnant and i failed the glucose screening test. They are going to test me if i have diabetes with another blood test in a weeks time.I thought of making some food adjustments, but i am confused seeing GL and GI.Which should be considered by me.I thought i can eat a banana with my BF as its high in nutrients and has a medium glycemic load. But its glycemic index is high. Please share what you feel is more important for me who has a high possibility of having gestational diabetes

You need to start with the lower number GI foods. Some like bananas have a very high GL for some of us. I cannot eat them at all.

When you have your meter, check your glucose, eat a serving of a food, and check again in 90 minutes to 2 hours after first bite. Journal all of this including your exercisings.

I personally like the South Beach Living food plan with a few exceptions, those because the foods obviously don't like me. Or you can choose the Atkins phase 2 food plan and make your own choices about how many carbs you really want. Dr Sears website has some good suggestions too. Basic is free, but I don't buy into his supplements which supports his site.

I like for breakfast: 2 slices crisp bacon, 2 eggs, and half slice whole wheat toast with butter.
snack: apple slices with cream cheese dip
lunch: 3 oz cooked meat and huge salad and a fruit of some sort.
snack: apple slices with cheese
dinner like lunch.
bedtime snack is when I sin!!! I have half cup ice cream.

Much good luck and have a healthy happy babe and mom!!!
