Why two people with type II diabetes can have such different BSL levels?

I have had type II diabetes for about 2 years now. I am about 45 lbs overweight taking, taking janument twice a day and been following a very strict diet for about two months now, and my sugars are still out of control. My sister -in law has had type II diabetes for 16 years, is about 100 lbs overwreight, taking janumet twice a day and eats whatever she she wants and has perfect blood sugar control. Yesterday I had a small bowl of cherrios for breakfast, tomotao and cottage cheese for lunch, and chicken and green beans for dinner my fasting sugar was 250. She had no breakfast, pasta from Olive Garden for lunch, and a bannana split and half of her daughter's sundae at dinner and her fasting sugar was 111? How is that possible?

Everyones body and disease is different. Cherrios have carbs, as does cottage cheese. You may be more sensitive to carbs that most people. I have that problem, too. I also can't have caffeine because it raises my blood sugar too much. You said your sisters fasting blood sugar was 111, but I bet if she tested 2 hours after she ate it would have be high. You should talk to your doctor about your problem. I was the same way and had to start taking insulin.

Hi,

You should never compare yourself to another person. Each person's chemistry is different. Also, the reaction to medication can be different. What works well for one person may not work well for another.

Not all people who are Type 2 can get by with oral meds. It is possible that you may need insulin. My brother-in-law and his wife both have Type 2. He gets by with oral meds; but his wife needs to take insulin. Oddly enough, she has gotten down to a normal weight. So, there are many underlying chemical aspects that influence your reaction to foods and to meds.

The important thing is to see your doctor. You need to get your levels down to a normal range. That may mean increasing your oral meds or changing them. It may mean adding insulin. Your doctor will know best what you should try. It can take a while of changing meds and dosages until you get just the right combination for you.

Good for you in trying to eat a healthy diet. Keep up the good work.

Everyone is different - you can't compare yourself to someone else.

Your liver can produce glucose. My fasting is always high because my liver is producing it. If I test the moment I wake up it is 100-110, but then I shower and dress (no food yet) and then test I will be about 140-150. If that is all you had to eat yesterday you didn't have enough carbs, almost no carbs. You liver may have been overcompensating to produce to glucose you body needs that it didn't get from food.

Her fasting level might have been 111, but if she tested 2 hours after that meal, I'll bet her blood sugar was just as high as yours. She's probably NOT testing after meals, and giving herself a false sense of security. Or she may just have more circulating insulin than you do.

By the way, 111 fasting is NOT perfect control. She should be aiming for 100 fasting and UNDER 140 2 hours after meals.

Remember, each person is an individual. Diabetes is slightly different in each of us.

its about insulin levels....insulin is a hormone and it varies from person to person......you may want to talk to your Dr about adjusting your medications if your blood sugar is still so high....long term effects could result in kidney failure, heart problems, loss of eyesight, stroke, etc

something is not right...is she walking more than you
how can she have control? are you sure she is a diabetic?
if i was to eat what she ate forget it - i would gain 2 lbs and my sugar would over 200...
my a1c level is 5.3 (i really work hard)...
fasting sugar in the morning? that's very high

Everyone's chemistry is different. Some people have better luck than others. It's that simple. But be aware that some day her's might be worse than yours! And stay away from those ice creams!

Everyone's body is different.

Dude,

Nobody (no body) is the same.
