Will I have diabetes?

My dad got diabetes when I was around 5 or 6. I'm not sure what type of diabetes, but he got it AFTER I was born. Does that mean I will have it?

If there's a chance I'll get diabetes, does that mean I'll get it when I'm older not when I'm young?

If you have it in your family you are more likely to get it than if you don't. That doesn't mean you WILL get it. There is also no evidence to show that if you are going to get it, you can avoid it.

But many experts think you can avoid it through eating right and getting exercise. You don't need a LOT of exercise, just 20-30 min. a day of walking will do it. And your diet doesn't have to be extreme, just be careful with carbohydrates. If you cut out sandwiches on big French rolls and large orders of french fries, that cuts your carb intake by about half right there.

Next time you see a doctor see if they have a training class for diabetics. They teach how to eat relatively low-carb. Or you can get books on it.

As I said, though, there's no guarantee that this will keep you from developing type 2 diabetes (I'm guessing that's what your dad has) or that you wouldn't have gotten it anyway. But it's worth a try!

My dad got diabetes Type 2......when he was around 50, now he is 84.
I got diabetes when I was 48......I am now 52.

Type 2 is diabetes you get when you are older.

Don't be afraid, watch your sugars and starches even if you don't have diabetes.........

there's a 50% chance you will, and there's a 50% chance you wont. You should check for the signs:

Extreme thirst, peeing alot, feeling tried. also check your sugar. if it's over 150, you might have diabetes.

if your dad has type 1 you probably wont get it
but if your dad is type 2 there are ways to prevent it
