Serious diabetes question about sugar?

my mom has diabeetes. she has it really bad and has to take shots and check her sugar lots every day. she never never eats sugar. anyway, mom promised to buy me a new stereo if i cut the grass every week for 6 weeks. well, i did it for 7 weeks and she said i couldnt get it. i am so mad about it. anyway, i told her how not fair that was to go back on her deal.........anyway this morning i put sugar in her food and drink... do you think she will be ok.... i dont want to hurt her...help please

You are a rotten, spoiled, nasty person. I would not buy you anything. That was really a terrrible, terrible thing you did to your OWN MOM !!! She won't die from it, but is going to have some high blood sugar readings and she is going to wonder WHY. You are very, very, untrustworthy. You don't want to HURT her???? You should have thought of that before...

Ok, it wasn't a great thing to do, but it's done now and the most important thing to do is to manage it.

Tell your mom what you did, tell her you are really sorry and you will never do it again. She can check her blood sugar to see if it is going up more that usual and if it goes much higher that usual she can adjust her insulin.

A high blood sugar can cause problems, but not as fast as most people think, it takes a very high blood sugar to be dangerous.

Her sugar will spike! That is really dangerous, if she didn't adjust her insulin to the sugar intake, which I know she didn't because YOU put it in, she would get hyperglycemia or, if enough, ketoacidos!

There's a reason why she didn't buy that stereo. Just be patient and remember she can't give you everything you want. She's your one and only mom and you can buy all the stereos you want later on, but you only have one mom for the rest of your life. Hope this helps.

my mom has diabetes to, and something as simple as an apple affects her blodd sugar levels, i don't know if yours is as bad as mine, but i think you should let her know if something as simple as i described affects her, just to be safe. hope things go well with your mom! someone might have a better answer than me though.

benj we are talking about blood sugar leevels not what causes diabetes. once you have diabetes, sugar does affect you greatly, although it may not cause diabetes. and how do you know if she has type 2 diabetes to begin with?

if your mum has type 1 diebeties than that little sugar grudge was a bad idea so don't do it again as her pancreas which regulates the amount of blood sugar would not be able to cope as well as a normal persons would.however if it had done anything you would have noticed within 30 minutes.after that little stunt i wouldn't be nagging about a stereo for a while either

omg lol yer she should be fine. my dad is diabetic and he still eats sugar, he just puts through more insulin. any way when ur mum checks her blood sugar then if it is high because of the sugar she will know to inject more insulin. and if u did that hours ago if any thing bad was going to happen then it would of by now. know worry. and it was a bit unfair what she did. just tell her how u feel and that she promised. im sure it will all be fine.

If your mother has diabetes bad, and you did that to her for a stero...you need to keep yourself in check. Come on now....what is more important your mother or a dumb stero that will probably end up broken in a day (since we see how you take care of the stuff that is important to you....like your mother). GROW UP! Diabetes is not something to mess around with.

You had better tell her because if she knows about it she will know how to adjust her medication to deal with it.

Nope but she just may learn her lesson about empty promises to greedy children! That'll teach her!

R U INSANE!? SHE MITE DIE NOW! JUST FOR A STEREO? SHAME ON YOU

That's a NO,NO!

I don't know whether you are a person with a serious problem in self-control or you're just plain out of your mind.

Do you know what can happen to your mom? And why diabetes is a very serious problem? Diabetes itself can lead to many more complications such as Candida (a fungus) infection at the private part, polyneuropathy (tingling and numbness in feet), ARTERIAL DISEASE, RENAL FAILURE, BLINDNESS, and many more!

Yes, I agree that a diet high in glucose is not the only factor that causes a person to develop diabetes, but once you get it, it's a no-no to high sugar food.

Reading online articles alone is seriously insufficient to understand this disease. You have to understand how it works. Once you get diabetes Type 2, your cells are all resistant towards insulin. Insulin functions in lowering your blood sugar level by enhancing sugar to enter peripheral cells instead of staying in blood. So, the loss of insulin effect means there's almost nothing to push the sugar to out of the blood. This leads to many complications and acidosis (abnormally high level of acid in blood) is one of the major ones. Once you elevate the level of sugar entering the body, it's hard to get it down back since insulin is no longer there to help you (basically, it is there, but it can do nothing).

You'd better tell your mother to avoid further complicating things up. You wouldn't want to be the person responsible of causing your mom's leg to be amputated or getting myocardial infarction. Myocardial infarction is a very serious case especially because it involves death of heart muscle cells due to lack of blood supply and heart muscle cells are UNABLE TO REGENERATE.

Anyway, I'm sorta worried of how the previous person Benj understands diabetes because he almost got it all wrong. It's dangerous. I'd like to advise him to read on Guyton or Ganong's Physiology text book.

This is probably the most common misconception about diabetes. If you have diabetes, you do need to watch your sugar and carbohydrate intake to properly manage your blood sugar level with the help of your Registered Dietitian. However, if you do not have diabetes, sugar intake will not cause diabetes. So far, a diet high in calories, being overweight, and an inactive lifestyle are the main risk factors for Type 2 diabetes.

A study published in Diabetes Care (April 2003) re-confirmed that sugar does not cause diabetes. In this study, researchers analyzed data on nearly 39,000 middle-aged women, all of whom completed a 131-item food questionnaire. Six years later, there were 918 cases of Type 2 diabetes reported. Researchers found no definitive influence of sugar intake on the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Although excessive sugar intake is not the direct cause of Type 2 diabetes, overweight and obesity is one of the risk factors. To prevent diabetes, maintain a healthy weight and follow a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity and a sensible diet following the Healthy Eating Guidelines.
