Is diabetes genetic?

My grandma has diabetes, and i was just wondering if there was a chance i could get it when im older or not. Help?

Plz and Thx!

yes it is mandi, my mom has it. but it depends on the type u have as well as the way u eat. there is a chanceu could get it but just eat well and stay healthy. dont worry to much about it. u have a very slim chance of inheriting it from her.

Genetics can have a lot to do with both types of diabetes. You have a risk factor, so there is a possibility that you could develop diabetes. Just eat a healthy diet and get daily exercise. If you father has type 1, you are a 1 in 17 chance to develop type one. If your father has type 2,and was diagnosed before the age of 50, you stand a 1 in 7 chance of developing type 2. If your father has type 2 and was diagnosed after the age of 50, you are a 1 in 13 chance of developing it.

It gives you a 20% better chance of becoming diabetic. But that number in and of itself means nothing.

It also depends on how much exercise you get on a daily basis, on how healthy your food plan is, and on how closely you watch your weight.

Now, I am not saying diabetes hits overweight people. It is a mixed bag here. Skinny people can become diabetic just as easily. it is 50/50 chance on this.

It is the couch potato that has the best chance of becoming diabetic!!!

I recommend everyone get annual physical exam with blood workups. Don't just skip it because you feel good, look good, and are doing excellently at the gym or whatever. These things have a very nasty habit of being very very sneaky and biting even the most health conscious of all!!

Yes, there is a genetic component to diabetes, although many cases today are the result of lifestyle. On the other hand, I know plenty of very old women who were overweight and not that active that never developed diabetes (some of whom lived to 100). My Mom's close friend is 82 now, has weighed nearly 400 pounds for the last 50 years. She has asthma, but no diabetes or even any heart disease!

There is an increased probability if a family member has it. Both of my grandmothers have type 2, but I am the only one with type 1 (yay me). I do not think my case was due to genetics.

And there is a chance at ANYONE can get type 2 if they don't take care of themelves. Just try to keep healthy, and get regular glucose checks during doctor visits to make sure everything is ok.

Yes there is strong genetical predispostion for diabetes.

yes som times if you have a famely histery of it
