Recently diagnosed w/Type II diabetes. Been on meds & diet almost a month-sugars are hovering around 140.?

Is this normal progress? I went from one pill for 14 days, to 2 pills. I have cut sugar and am following a low carb diet...Doctor seems ok w/progress. Anything else I should be doing? Original count was 288. Thanks in advance.

If your original count was 288, count your blessings! You are making great strides. Be sure to know that getting your blood glucose levels under control is something that does not happen overnight for everyone. It's a process.

I am the Program Director for ADA in Chesapeake, VA. I am not sure if you are local, but no matter where you go, people will tell you to keep doing what you're doing and add exercise to it. Working out is another huge proponent in getting your blood glucose under control. For someone with diabetes to go from 288 to 140, you are doing well. 140 is not horrible. Good job.

If you would like to ask more questions, feel free to email me at jthompson@diabetes.org. I would be glad to help you if I can, it seems like you're on the right track by yourself.

It looks like you will probably be able to control your diabetes without taking insulin if you stay on this track. You are just slightly above the recommended range of blood glucose between 70 to 120. Diabetes is generally managed to keep it under 130.

There are two additional things i can think of - exercise and taking a 1000 mg cinnamon capsule at dinner and breakfast. Exercise such as just walking 20 minutes per day makes a huge difference because it forces your body to switch from storing excess glucose to burning glucose. Cinnamon also seems to help increase sugar metabolism, and it can actually work better than some prescription medications, so its worth trying a bottle to see if it affects your next readings.

Hey, you are doing all the good!!! It took me a couple of months to get anywhere near that range!!! But that was mostly lack of guidance on dietary choices. I was following the ADA recommended diet plan which is extremely detrimental and very, very high carb, at least compared to what I eat now.

I follow basicly the South Beach food plan for maintainance. Some exceptions.

To check foods to see what they do to or for you:
1. check glucose level
2. prepare and eat a food portion, half banana for instance.
3. Check glucose level again after 90 mins to 2 hrs after first bite of food.
4. journal all!!

I am sure you are exercising. I walk an hour as fast as I can every day. Fresh air and exercise at the same time. Bad weather, Malls, Museums, large stores I don't care to shop in, etc.

Swedish report just out shows that 90 minutes of high-impact exercise per week can bring diabetes caused by metabolic syndrome under control. (As opposed to 30 minutes daily). In as little as 16 weeks. It also works on the other aspects of metabolic syndrome: high bp, and improves the ability to absorb oxygen.
140 is still too high, but it is a lot better than the 288.
Good luck

While following the low carb diet continue to exercise. I have found that natural minerals or other natural products have aided my grandmother with her diabetes and she has seen a significant change when she continues to take them and eat the correct way.

EXERCISE...especially after eating. Read a book called You Are WHat You Eat by Gillian Mc Keith and reverse the diabetes as soon as you can. DOnt depend on meds to help you for long.

Exercise will also help decrease sugar in system. You cut your sugar almost in half within a month which is good progress but you still have to cut it more.

Take a product called PGX. you'll loose weight and your numbers will go down. There is a book out there called "How to cure diabetis naturally". Read it ! it works
