Any teens with diabetes ?

.. what age did you get it?? and how do you control it ??

My boyfriend and I are both 19. He's had diabetes since he was around 8, and controls his through a combination of insulin injections and pills. I was diagnosed almost 9 months ago, right before my 19th birthday. Mine is diet controlled only. We exercise togtther, and help watch out for each other because it's easy to get sidetracked or discouraged. He was actually the one that pin-pointed my symptoms and dragged me to a doctor!

I was 15 when I was diagnosed. They put me in the hospital for 4 days and they had a diabetic educator come talk with me about how to set up how I would eat my meals and how to pick out what to eat and how much insulin I needed to take. In the beginning, they had me checking my sugar before every meal, before bed and waking up at 3 am to check it. I would also have to have a small snack before bed to make sure my sugar didn't drop.

I do agree with the other person, make sure you always carry something sweet (i.e. glucose tablets or I've found skittles work VERY well)

If you don't feel "right" just check your sugar to be on the safe side.

After controlling my blood sugar with 2 different types of insulin. Long Acting: Lantus and Short Acting: Novolog for about 2 years, they decided I could move to the pump.

The pump is AMAZING! It helps keep you under tighter control, and they even have ones now that can monitor your blood sugar for you! Instead of atleast 4 shots a day I went to 1 stick (inserting my pump site) every 3 days or so (the site has to be rotated every 3-4 days)

I do want to stress, diabetes is not something to be embarrassed about. I know other diabetics that are "ashamed" they are diabetic and won't tell anyone. They will go to the restroom or car or some private room to do any blood sugar checking or shots. I've had one even tell me she nearly passed out because she couldn't get to a "private room" quick enough. If something were to happen, no one would know what to do with her, since NO one knew she was diabetic. Make sure your friends know and know how to help!

My son was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when he was 10 years old. He is now 15 and takes oral medication to control it. I was 28 when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and that was 17 years ago. I take oral medication and 2 types of insulin. We are both working very hard on getting to the point of being able to control our diabetes with diet only.

my sis was in high school when she was diagnosed... I think either fresh or soph year. Controlling it was rough at first, you have to learn how your body reacts to the foods you eat, and the insulin you take. She had to test regularly and give herself insulin shots 3x a day. She now has an insulin pump, so she doesn't have to worry about shots except on the very rare occasion. She does still check regularly, but she is more used to understanding how she feels, and how to adjust the insulin to counteract her blood sugar. Please, talk to your Dr. if you have questions or concerns. If you were just diagnosed, hang in there, and it will get better. The diabetes won't stop you from doing what you want, you'll just have to go about it a little differently. Take care of yourself, and make sure you ALWAYS have a piece of candy with you in case your blood sugar drops and you can't get to a store, vending machine, or restaurant.

You'll be ok.

i was diagnosed at age 12 and i'm 14 now. i control it w/ insulin. novalog and humalog. check my blood sugar about 2-3 times a day.
