Diabetes...whats it like to live with?

How long can one expect to live if it is controlled? Does anyone know anyone who has lived with it for a long time? Please share your experiences.

Well its pretty normal, except you meet TONS and TONS of hot diabetic guys! You can live a life time, have kids, pay taxes just like people without it. My Great Grandmother had diabetes and was 89 when she passed, I have type 1 and have had it for 16 years and am fine, except when i was younger i had some hard time controlling it, my humoglobin a1c level was like 16.5 once!!! now its around 8.5 getting better but its still kind of a struggle

It's pretty damn cool. I makes me feel more unique (huzzah for type one!). The near death experiences have been quite interesting as well.

The only thing that really concerns me is that type one diabetes makes it 13 times more likily to have a heart attack. Otherwise, if managed well, diabetes shouldn't cause any interferance in a person's lifespan.

I have had it for 18 years. I went to diabetic camps and have always been facinated by other people who share this disease. It also prevents me from ever having to serve in the military. It has helped me keep my weight down by staying away from sugar. As a child I was a little blimp until I came down with it and lost a lot of weight. I didn't eat chocolate for about 3 years after that, and thought it was disgusting when I was forced to eat some due to a low blood sugar.

I have alsmost drowned twice from having low blood sugars in water (once in a pool, once in a bathtub).

If a person with diabetes takes care of themselves as soon as they find out they are diagnosed then they should live a pretty normal healthy long life. To do this though, you have to keep your blood sugars regulated and exercise and eat right all the time.

I have been diagnosed with diabetes since I was 14 which was 6 years ago. I have kept track of things pretty good. Every now and then I get to where I dont check my sugars as often as I should and I can feel the effects so I get back on track.

You can live with it for along time. You just have to have the will power to want to stay healthy. I know a few people that dont take care of themselves and they are in the hospital ALOT.
