Diabetes routine blood test?

can diabetes be discovered during a routine blood test?

Most routine blood tests include glucose levels so yes, it can. Mine was discovered on a blood test for surgery. Your doctor must then have a second blood test run to be diagnosed with Diabetes, you can have false positive readings and according to the ADA, two separate test are required for a diagnosis.

Yes, if the routine test is for blood sugar. If this is above normal, the doctor will probably order a 2 hour PC blood test where you go without eating after midnight; they give you a very high sugar orange drink and then check a blood sugar every 15 -30 minutes to see how long it takes for your blood sugar level to come down.

Sometimes. If the doctor orders a random or fasting blood glucose test, it might catch it. However, its best not to rely on these tests. My doctor missed it twice, once with each of those tests. It wasn't until I asked for an HbA1c test that she finally got the correct diagnosis. Even though my average blood sugar could get quite high, my morning level could be normal, so I went undiagnosed for a LONG time. All that time, the diabetes was damaging my body.

I suspected that I had it, and insisted on the HbA1c test and finally got the right diagnosis.

I suggest that you ask for 2 tests:

the HbA1c

and

a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Between these two tests, they should know if you have diabetes or if you are on your way to getting it.

The sooner you find out, (if you do have it), the better.

Good luck!

No. You have to ask for a "blood glucose test". This will test the amount of sugar in your blood and how it is metabolizing.

It depens on what your blood sugar is.If it is high then yes.If you are nomal then no.

yes, during a routine blood test
