My boyfriend and diabetes?

Me and my boyfriend recently got in an argument because he kept falling asleep on me during conversations. Could his sudden sleepy spells be caused by his diabetes?

Also how can I encourage him to loose weight and check his blood sugar? He usually takes his medicine but he refuses to check his sugar.

Besides exercise and dieting and medication, what else can we do to improve his diabetes?

Thanks for All the Help

I get very sleepy when my sugars are too high and after I've corrected a too low so it could be his diabetes. Not checking his sugar is a major mistake...you can't go simply by how you feel you need to be aware of those numbers and so does your doctor. Best of Luck.

Well four people on my family have diabetes and i have experienced many times, a few lately, that if you do not check your blood sugar that could end very badly. My brother didn't the other day and thought he was high so he took more insulin which only made things worse because really he was low, and he ended up crashing and not knowing where he was when he was home because he was so messed up because he didn't check it. My dad also almost died because of similar situation but i wont get into that. Sorry for the horror stories butt hat really is an importnat thing for him to check it!

And if he really does only "usually" take insulin that isn't very good try to encourage him to take it always and to check his blood sugar. Encourage him to take it by telling him you want him to stay healthy because you care about him.

I am not sure about the falling asleep part, sorry.

Just make sure he doesn't eat too bad to improve it

Well, for one he can get serious about it. Diabetics that don't check their blood sugars have no idea what progress or lack of progress is occurring to their bodies until they go for a A1c test.................I hope he does that.

As far as his sleepiness is concerned it could be due to hypoglycemia or many other medical conditions.

Sounds like his medication should be adjusted. Without testing I do not know how your boyfriend can control his condition.

Falling asleep means he is not getting enough rest at night. Common with diabetics. Have get physical and talk to the doctor about the sleep.

Best Wishes.

It could be an sleep apnea that has something to do with his heart. Diabetis affects the heart, lungs and other internal organ. Unless of course you have a voice quality that would put a person to sleep, your BF is really tired and sleepy, or your conversation is boring.

You should fine this website very helpful. Good Luck and you are welcome! Hope this helps!

he should not be dieting but eating healthy....big difference, it is a lifestyle change.....those are the things he needs to do...checking his blood sugar is an important factor in maintaing control of his blood sugars.
