Is drinking energy drinks bad for type one diabetes?and why? |
Is drinking energy drinks bad for type one diabetes?and why? For one thing they are full of sugar which you know is bad. Most all of them also contain caffeine which can also raise blood sugars in many diabetics. Energy drinks can have severe bad reactions in a lot of people. They contain herbs that people can be allergic to and not even know it. I have seen in the paper many cases where someone ended up in the hospital from drinking them. I was even watching an off road race on tv a few months back and the driver of one truck had drank an energy drink right before the race. He never drank one of them before and it just so happened that this drink was the major sponser of his truck. Well, 15 minutes into the race, he could not breath and they had to rush him to the hospital. Turned out it was from the drink. He had an allergy to one of the ingredients and almost died. He had to have someone else finish the race for him... energy drinks are meant to give people a rush of energy and the easiest for that rush is glucose which is what powers the body. now, being a type one diabetic, this amount of glucose entering your body at this rate will bring your blood sugar very high in a very short amount of time. so if you really do want to drink some, take very small amounts over a period of time and make sure you take rapid acting insulin. The sugared ones like Gatorade and Powerade are extremely high in carbs, but you should still be able to have them in modest amounts if you give yourself the right amount of insulin to cover it. Propel, Fuze Slenderize, and G2 are sugar-free or low sugar and are all good choices. As already conveyed by MamaSmurf. They are full in the content you should avoid or have in moderate amounts. Energy Drinks are high in Glucose avoiding them is the best for those with T1Diabetes. All the so called Energy drinks are loaded with sugars, this is what makes them Energy!! So yes they are bad for those of us who must count every carb and avoid unnecessary ones. It's fine if you drink the sugar free ones. I've had not trouble with them. |
