Im scared of my diabetes?

I have type 1 diabetes and am on an insulin pump. Ive yet to actually CHANGE iit as in put the unfusion set inside me. My dad usually does it. But im really scared because im scared i wont do it right and i have to do it by august 17th please help me not be scared!?

Kutie, if you could handle giving yourself shots, then you should be able to breeze right on thru this too. dont be scared...I would concider it your life line and learn to love it not be scared of it! Take a deep breathe and just do it, once you have done it the first time, you will quickly learn its just a walk in the park!
good luck.

I have a friend with an insulin pump. She used to be scared about doing it wrong as well, but she's gotten used to it with practice. She didn't do it by herself at first either, but she didn't like being dependent on other people, so she eventually made an appointment with her doctor so he could guide her through the process, now she's been doing it herself for two years just fine and says it's pretty easy.

You just need to give it a try. Do it when someone who knows how is around so you're not as nervous. The more you try, the more confident you'll get, and it won't be scary anymore. When you get scared, just tell yourself that you're doing it to stay healthy, and that's worth it.

My brother has diabetes, and he's going through exactly what you are. I've seen how scary it was when he was first diagnosed.
First, think about this: if you used a pen, that would be poking yourself maaany times a day instead of just once every 2 or 3 days. Secondly, I'm sure you already use this, but use Emla. If you don't use it, you can buy it at the store or the pharmacy.

It will help you become more comfortable if you try putting the set in. This might not be an option for you, but my mom offered to let my brother try putting it in her. If that won't work, try talking to your diabetes doctor or nurse. I believe when my brother was diagnosed they had a little box with rubbery stuff resembling skin that parents practiced on. Maybe they could lend you one or something.

I really hope you get over your fears, and if you find something that makes you less scared, I would love to hear it to tell my brother.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have an insulin pump too, been using one for 8 years. The first time I had to insert the infusion I was freaked! The first time is the worst, not cause it hurts more, but because you need to work up the guts to do it. And once you have, it will be a cinch from there on out. Do you insert by hand, or do you have the little plastic inserter where you just push a button and it does the rest? To this day, if I do a regular injection I can't just jab, I have to ease it in. I'd take the pump infusion automatic serter anyday. Good luck, and I know you can do it!

talk to your dr or nurse and ask for them to show you how it is done and to answer questions that you have. tell them your scared and you need help.
