Are you born with type 1 diabetes?

if a person has TYPE 1 diabetes does that mean they were born with it? because someone told me that and i didnt think it was true. i just want to make sure it is true or not.

You can be born with it, (type1) or develop it later. Type 2 is always developed later , usually after the age of 30, but there are some that get it when they are younger.

No, type 1 persons are not necessarily born with it or with the predisposition to getting it.

type 1 is caused by some sort of injury or illness that kills the langerhans islet cells in the pancreas and results in the pancreas not doing at all what it is supposed to: producing any insulin.

type 2 is caused by the muscle cells not accepting the insulin produced by the langerhans islet cells. This is called insulin resistance.

Neither is caused by foods ingested, lack of exercise, or any other thing suggested by some people.

the reason most people don't think there is any diabetes in their family backgrounds is that it wasn't tested for before about 15 years ago.

Type 1 persons are found quickly as they land in the hospital in crisis and wake up in ICU.

Yes you can be born with it...........Type 1 diabetics produce very little or no insulin, No one is 100% sure why this occurs, though some think it may be caused by a virus.

Type 2 diabetes is a different type and those that are type 2 are usually insulin resistant as opposed to not producing any insulin.

You can be born with a genetic predisposition for it. Most aren't born with Type 1 actually occurring, but develop the problem over time.

I have a friend who was actually tested for it at 15 because relatives had type 1 and she didn't start to have any problems until 21 (a couple months after she married).

You can be born with type 1 or you can develop it at any time in your life.

There are some newer studies that suggest a low level of vitamin D may be a cause of type one diabetes..
Which may explain why I have it..
No one in my family has diabetes.. type 1 or 2.. lol

sabastio !
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system that normally protects the body against infections goes wrong and attacks the beta cells that make insulin. There are genetic factors and environmental factors that cause the immune system to do this.
