Early menopause - diabetes related... please read me doctors!

My mum died at 44 of diabetes (insulin controlled) related problems when I was 19 including kidney faliure (she was on dialysis) and she had a leg amputated cos of gangrine (sorry if not spelt right).

She'd also had a triple heart by-pass due to strokes caused by incresed potassium levels.

I know that my mum had an early menopause at 39 and I'm wondering if this was due to her being diabetic (which I'm not) or whether it's just hereditary through being female.

It's just one of those passing through my brain thoughts cos my hormones have been all over the place recently.

What do you think doctors?

Wes - considering I cared for my mother during her least years though her dialysis, strokes and amputation, you could say that I am FULLY aware of the issues I could face.
I ain't wearing blinkers here.
I exercise, eat wholegrain EVERYTHING, not a taste of white pasta, bread, sugar passes my lips.
It was a question regarding menopause but I'm not stupid.
I dip-test myself and my kids every 6 months. Although I know Diabetes cannot kill you, neglect of proper control can.
My mother did not look after herself and I can assure you I won't be making that mistake.

Wooooah!!! let me just say im a diabetic 21 yr old and iv asked these questions to my consultant
1.Diabetes so not linked to the menapause or fertility problems...yes very bad controlled diabtets can cause a M/C and defects but very very rare
2.Diabetes does not KIll u! some of the illness which can be assosiated with can develop and make u very ill but no more than anyone else.
Just needed to claffiy this as when i was diagnosed at 12 people scared me saying they died of it but u dont u can get very ill and possibly die from illness possibly linked.
lol so the answer is no, early menopause can run in the family but not linked to diabetes
xx

It is very likely that your mother's early menopause was a result of her chronic and very serious health problems. However, it could be that there's a genetic predisposition, although I doubt it.

however, speaking of predisposition, YOU are PREDISPOSED to having diabetes. In fact, if you do all the wrong things, overweight, eat high carb, very little exercise, I can almost guarantee you that this same disease will rear it's ugly head in your life as well.

Have you had a glucose tolerance test? Have you discussed your mother's health conditions with your personal physician?

I would encourage you to seek the advice of your medical doctor in both regards.

Wes

Not a doctor - but I am a diabetic 46 year old who is relatively well controlled and I have no signs of menopause or any of the deadly things they threaten diabetics with (my short sightedness is all my own!)
I've not heard this is partcu;ar;y a diabetic problem (but then they rarely tell you what ARE diabetic problems until you actually have a problem when it is always down to diabetes!!

My mom went into menopause at 38, and I went into it at 39 and my daughter who is 35 soon to be 36 is starting to go in and none of us have Diabetes. So I don't think there is any connection.
Ask you doctor.

i am not a doctor but i would assume that your mothers early menopause would have been because of her many chronic illnesses...although it is not impossible that she could have gone through menopause naturally at this age despite her health problems
