Diabetes or Hypoglycemia? ?

My 16 year old daughter has been experiencing many of the symptoms of both of these diseases and i just wanted to do some research on them before her doctor appointment later this week. i was wondering if anyone had these symptoms before being diagnosed with either of these diseases. These are her symptoms that go along with the symptoms of these.... she gets a headache almost everyday, she complains that her vision is getting blurry when she looks at the board at school and she is having problems consternating at school, she can drink around ten glasses of water or a drink a day, she eats alot of food but never gains any weight, she goes to the restroom 2-3 times just in the morning before school, and lately shes been getting dizzy then eats and feels better then later it happens again till she eats. I know that sounds like alot thats why were going to the doctor but i would really appreciate the feedback! Thank you!

no shes not over weight (shes been involved in sports since she was 3)

and the only diabetes in our family was in her great-grandfather but he developed it later in life

I definitely think that it's diabetes. The urination, headaches, dizziness, blurry vision, thirst, etc. are spot on. I'm sorry she's experiencing it so young! Does Type 1 diabetes run in the family? Or is she overweight? (Then it might be Type 2 diabetes)

I think hypoglicemia, but to make sure try to test your blood glucose fasting and post prandial 2 hours after eating.......evaluate the result and make final conclusion

Considering how much she's urinating, I suspect diabetes more than hypoglycemia. Please do get her tested ASAP!

sounds like the same symptoms my husband has and he is diabetic get her tested asap

There is a very simple test that the doctor can perform that will go a long way towards clearing this up.

it is called HbA1C (or just A1C). this is a simple blood test that the doctor can perform in his office in 5-10 minutes IF he has the materials. otherwise, he will have to send a blood sample to a lab for 2-3 days.

The A1C test measures the AVERAGE blood sugar level over the last 90 days. A NORMAL reading is between 5 and 6. if the reading is normal then your daughter does NOT have diabetes.

If the reasing is above 7, then the doctor should perform a Glucose Tolerance Test. The Glucose Tolerance Test is more complicated, and requires you to be in the doctor office for 3-4 hours.

If the Glucose Tolerance Test indicates diabetes, then you need to start treatment immediately.

If the A1C is above 7 but the Glucose Tolerance Test says no diabetes, then your daughte might be HYPERGLYCEMIC. This is controlled through proper diet and exercise.

If the A1C test is below 5, then your daughter may be HYPOCLYCEMIC -- too low blood sugar. THIS condition more closely matches her symptoms - especially the involvement in sports (high exercise level), headaches, blurred vision, concentration problems, and relatively little family history. In this case her diet needs to be better balanced -- more nutritious food, less junk food.

The A1C test is VERY simple and almost painless. it would be worth you effort to contact you doctor and request this test.
