Treatments for type 2 diabetes

a. Educating yourself about diabetes will be part of your treatment plan

b. Permanent life style changes as to what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat are essential in treating diabetes. portion control and carb. intake are essential.

c. Exercise burns glucose, exercise frequently.

d. Take your meds. (if prescribed)

e. Have a quarterly A1c test to performed by a lab to determine your progress or lack of progress.

f. Lose weight if necessary

g. Use your home meter as a guide and test when eating new or different foods to see how your glucose reacts to them. In fact test frequently especially if this is new to you. You should always test 1st thing in the morning, before and after meals and at bedtime. As you control this better you won't find the need to test as often.

There are a number of drugs that can help. But the real treatment is controlling your blood sugar, which you do through diet and exercise. You have to be careful what you eat, stay away from too many carbohydrates. You have to get some exercise, nothing too bad, walking is okay. And you monitor your blood sugar and get blood tests every few months to see how you're doing long-term.
