Has anyone gone to Disney World with a child having Diabetes?

We are leaving for Disney in 5 days, My son is 12 and wears an insulin pump. Any suggestions, advice appreciated. He's also never flown before. I also have a 14yr old and a 9 mnth old :)

Of course we take our kids to disney.
Just follow your normal patterns. Always carry carbs with you and extra water is a good idea for everyone at disney. There is a lot of walking so your exercise level is very high.Plan on extra carbs for all.
Plan your meals in advance so that if you want to eat at a certain place , it isn't an hour away.

Realize that if you use disney transportation, it will take 3-4 times longer to get places than you think it would with a car.
We had to eat at a place we didn't want to since it was past lunch time and we were not yet near our destinations.

Plan a rest period in the middle of the day for everyone. perhaps have lunch at the hotel and swim or just rest a while.
These are great ideas for everyone going to disney.
Have a great time.

Leave the pump on him, don't declare it unless asked, and don't put it on the conveyor belt to get X-rayed. It can damage the pump.

If you will be changing time zones, most experts recommend keeping your pump set to your normal home time. Unless you'll be there for several days or you're traveling more than 4 time zones, it's usually not worth an adjustment. Just check BG's more frequently than normal.

As for Disney World, put him on a temporary basal rate for the day that equates to slow walking (for me it's about 60-70% of normal), and just enjoy. Hamburgers, chicken tenders, and small ice cream bars are good choices. They have plenty of things there to eat that are decent, especially if you avoid the fast-food booths and sit down for lunch. Check his BG's every 2 hours and adjust as necessary. Have fun!

Disney is very good with accessibility. I would go right to the customer service desk when you get there and inquire what types of rides they suggest he avoid, and they'll also have you sign any waivers they may have for using rides that might not be recommended. I'm in a wheelchair and when I go to carnivals, etc. I go there first instead of waiting in line and having to go back and sign a waiver saying I've read the health risks. You might also ask his doctor and see what you can do about traveling with his pump. Maybe there's a more portable version that can be rented for the vacation. Have fun :)

Yep, I went to Disney with my son who has diabetes. He was 11 at the time and not on the pump yet. It was not an issue at all. I asked Disney for a fridge in my room for the insulin. I called the airline ahead of time and asked if his syringes etc would be an issue and they said no as long as everything had the prescription labels. The security screeners didn't ask any questions or make life difficult at all.
We had a great Disney vacation and diabetes really didn't affect the fun time we had one way or the other.
Have fun!
