How many people in your family have Diabetes? How late in life can you get type 1 Diabetes? |
There is a lot of bad Diabetic history in my family. My grandpa has type 2 Diabetes, but I'm not overly concerned with type 2, because I exercise regularly and aside from family history, I don't really have any of the "at risk" signs. I'm mainly concerned with type 1. My uncle has it, and my brother was diagnosed with it when he was about a year old. A couple of years later, my sister was diagnosed when she was about 12. Thanks! I do test my blood once in a while to make sure it's normal and every couple of years or so I do an official blood test at the doctor's just to make sure too... :( Type 1 diabetes can show up at any time in life. Its just a lot more common to show up in younger children. If you are going to get...there is no way to avoid it unfortunatly. But only time will tell. I just reccomend getting tested for diabetes yearly though in case you do by small chance develop it. The oldest person I know was 36. But I am sure there are some out there who had it as older. I would just look at it as something you can not control so just live you life. Keep eating right and exercising and hopefully you can warn off Type 2. Good luck with all of this. I have Type 1 along with my dad and older sister. My sister and I were both diagnosed early (2 years old and younger), but my dad was not diagnosed until he was in his late teens/early 20's (not sure the exact age). He was very athletic at the time and in great shape. I also have a younger sister who does not have diabetes, so you may be the lucky one in your family! According to Dr. Arthur Rubenstein, renowned endocrinologist and dean of medicine at Mount Sinai (New York), diabetes is transformed into a juvenile disease. Indeed, the average age at which he was falling. "Ten years ago, we teach medical students that the disease did not affect less than 40 years, said Dr. Robin Goland about type 2 diabetes. Today, children under ten years are affected. " I work with a lady who just got diagnosed for diabetes and shes over 65. So you can get diabetes at any age. im the only one in my whole family who has diabetes and i got it when i was four I'm 15 and I was diagnosed when I was about 6 years old. I'm not a doctor or anything but I know type one diabetes can be invoked by an catching a cold resulting in a autoimmune lapse within your body. I have no history of diabetes in my family nor did I eat sugary snacks, having a parent which realised the health hazards. This may seem like child abuse but I was deprived of sugar snacks like lollies, having one a week - How inhumane! However, if your immediate family has got diabetes you do have a chance of getting it, however there's a larger chance you wont. But in saying that, there has been a discovery of an immunity to diabetes, achieved by injection such as getting the flu-shot. Both my grandparents from my mother's side as well as my father's mother had and have type 2 Diabetes. My mother as well. All were diagnosed fairly late in life. My brother in law has Type 1 and his sister was just diagnosed, in her 20.s. His was diagnosed fairly early in his teens. Strangely enough none of their parents have Diabetes. |
