Many experts, including the American Diabetes Association, recommend that 50 to 60 percent of daily calories come from carbohydrates, 12 to 20 percent from protein, and no more than 30 percent from fat.

Spacing meals throughout the day, instead of eating heavy meals once or twice a day, can help a person avoid extremely high or low blood glucose levels.

With few exceptions, the best way to lose weight is gradually: one or two pounds a week. Strict diets must never be undertaken without the supervision of a doctor.

People with diabetes have twice the risk of developing heart disease as those without diabetes, and high blood cholesterol levels raise the risk of heart disease. Losing weight and reducing intake of saturated fats and cholesterol, in favor of unsaturated and monounsaturated fats, can help lower blood cholesterol.

Why exercise?

Exercise burns calories, which will help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Regular exercise can help your body respond to insulin and is known to be effective in managing blood glucose. Exercise can lower blood glucose and possibly reduce the amount of medication you need to treat diabetes, or even eliminate the need for medication.

Exercise can improve your circulation, especially in your arms and legs, where people with diabetes can have problems.

Exercise can help reduce your cholesterol and high blood pressure. High cholesterol and high blood pressure can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Exercise helps reduce stress, which can raise your glucose level.

It can lower your risk for heart disease, reduce your cholesterol levels and your blood pressure.

In some people, exercise combined with a meal plan, can control Type 2 Diabetes without the need for medications. Source(s): http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/healt...

First question what do you do for work!!! Do you have a job where you sit most of the day(office job, truck driver..etc.)??
Your doctor should have giving you a guide of foods you can eat and exercises to do!! My mom has diabetes too and she lost most of her wieght going for walks and a treedmill in the winter months. And takes her meds. and eats non-greasy foods, she grills everything now, and no sweets!!! I hope this helps..smiles.
aww ur lucky!!! i heard u could lose weight ;-)
First thing is, don't panic. I was diagnosed, got things under control. You should A) ask your doctor exactly what you asked here, B) go to www.diabetes.org, the American Diabetes Assn. (ADA) site, C) BUY a copy of ADA guide to diabetes (any bookstore), D) for the sake of simplicity just follow the South Beach Diet (buy at bookstore), assuming your doctor is cool with it, E) exercise aerobically at first (walking, or running/biking if you can) and later adding 20 minutes of weight work during the week.

Regarding exercise, join your YMCA and take a spin class or use a treadmill or take a group swim class; or even just yoga can be a great start.

I was nearly your age when diagnosed, went on to lose 40 pounds and run a marathon within the six months after my diagnosis. MIND AND WILL-POWER, FRIEND.

Good luck!
Stop eating sugar and loose weight. Get help. Go on line "diabetes association". Its a sneaky problem and will not let up. You must do something or you will start loosing things like eye site, toes and/or internal organs. You must take the action.
I just completed putting together a non-commercial webpage to help fellow diabetics learn what I've learned in order to keep things under control and help avoid diabetic complications:
