Can ketones be a sign of anything else besides diabetes? Was diagnosed with severe bronchitus'early pneumonia.

They said it can be from starvation, and I didn't have anything to eat for a little over 24 hours, but I wouldn't think that would cause ketones, because that's not long enough to go without eating to cause ketones is it? I know it's also a sign of diabetes, although I've not yet been tested. Is there anything else that could cause this, or would this mainly be a diabetic problem? They did say I was severely dehydrated and gave me an IV with some antiobiotics (for the pneumonia) and liquid to rehydrate. Any helpful answers would be greatly appreciated.

With the list of illness's you've described, it would be total and complete incompetence not to have checked you for diabetes. Glucose level is a routine test on any metabolic panel. It should be a given that this test was done. However sometimes, the obvious is overlooked. Ketone's can most deferentially occur in less in 24 hours in your urine, also have Ketons with dehydration, as well as certain diets others have already told you about. My advice is ask your doctor ASAP! ONE DOESN'T NEED TO WONDER OR SPECULATE ABOUT DIABETES. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
We can speculate here all day, but you do need to have medical tests done. There could be lots of causes, but sustained weight loss could cause ketones in your urine and blood, especially if you have been eating very few carbohydrates. Ask your doctor if she will order some blood and urine tests.
If you're dehydrated, or have spent the entire day vomiting, you can throw ketones. After childbirth, I felt dehydrated, and my nurse said there were a lot of ketones in my urine. Also, when my daughter barfed out her guts once, she had that 'fruity' breath you get when you're throwing ketones. Her urine test confirmed it.
High ketones can are often present in people suffering from metabolic acidosis. Since you say your they suspected it was dietary in its origin, you should ask yourself what kinds of foods you'd been eating even before your 24 hour fast. Diets like 'South Beach' and 'Atkins' that are based on low carb intake can induce metabloic acidosis and cause high ketone levels.
