Whats the difference between type one an type two diabetes? |
Whats the difference between type one an type two diabetes? Type I diabetes (also called juvenile-onset diabetes) occurs when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. It usually occurs in people younger than 30 years. However, it can occur at any age. It is a lifelong disease and there is no cure. About 1 million Americans have type 1 Diabetes. Type II diabetes (also called maturity-onset diabetes) usually occurs in people over 30 years. Obesity is a major risk factor for this type of diabetes. People with this condition either don't produce enough insulin to control glucose levels or their cells simply do not respond to the insulin. The most common symptoms for ADULTS are: excessive thirst, increased urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children (up to around age 18-20). In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does produce insulin, but either (a) does not produce an adequate amount or (b) is resistant to the insulin that is produced. Type 1 is always treated with insulin therapy (shots). Type 2 is usually treated with oral medications, but can require some insulin therapy. Some Type 2 diabetics (those with mild cases) are able to control their condition with diet and exercise. I am a Diabetes Health Educator and a Type 2 diabetic. Type 1 Diabetes you have prior to the age of 18. Basically you have ALL of your life. Type 2 Diabetes you aquire as an adult. Type one diabetes, is for children who are obesed or not having the right healthy meal.
