Has anyone heard of a 12 month old with diabetes? Neonatal diabetes occurs when a baby is born with high blood sugar levels that must be treated with insulin within the first month after the baby is born.. Causes vary, and the condition may either be temporary or permanent. Researchers at the University of Bergen in Norway studied two babies with permanent neonatal diabetes, and determined that their disease appeared to be caused by a mutation in the gene for the enzyme glucokinase. This enzyme is located in the cells of the pancreas, and is essential in the metabolism of glucose. The researchers have published their findings in the The New England Journal of Medicine (volume 344; pages 1588-1592; May 24, 2001). They believe that the glucokinase mutation is probably the most common cause of permanent neonatal diabetes, and hope that pediatricians will be aware of this in infants with the disease. In addition, the researchers note that a second mutation in the glucokinase gene has been linked to a milder form of diabetes.
