Do you hate it when people ask about your diabetes? |
When people see me check my blood sugar the first thing they ask is, "Does that hurt?". The second thing they ask is, "Do you have to take shots, and do they hurt?" I understand people are curious, but sometimes is can get to be a little annoying. Or they try to tell you what you're doing wrong, such as "don't prick yourself on the finger, my mom always checks her arm". (Someone actually said that to me.) Does anyone else have stories about this kind of thing? It's a catch 22 for me. Yep, it irks me that people stare at me when I test my blood, but I am eager to talk about it openly to those who ask. The reason: majority of people need to know. With such an increase in people being diagnosed with the disease they should know the basics of it, they should know that its not just sugar we have to watch, its carbohydrates. They should know that we can live normal lives with it, and they should know how to prevent it. I will never be embarassed or hide in a bethroom to check my blood. Diabetes is a part of me and I have come to accept it. Sweety it is in human and nature and especially female human nature to have empathy. We want for you to understand that we are concerned for you and would help if we could. I think this feeling of wanting to help is what has made so much progress in the medical field so that we do have doctors to discover such conditions as diabetes or depression for that matter. Try to see these people's responses or reactions to your condition as a good thing and just blow off teh stupid ones. Best wishes Well my best friend has type 2 diabetes and i have just been diagnosed. i hope no one asks me stupid questions like, " does it hurt?" i asked my friend that once and she said no i'm just makeing myself bleed. THE BEST CURE FOR THESE STUPID QUESTIONS IS DON'T DO THOSE THINGS IN THE PUBLICS EYE. GO TO THE RESTROOM AND DO IT IN PRVATE. I HAVE BEEN DOING THAT FOR 12 YEARS NOW AND I DON'T GET ASKED ABOUT THAT EXCEPT WHEN I OPEN MY BIG MOUTH ABOUT IT AND TALK ABOUT IT. Yep, all the time. i sometimes think that instead of wearing an insulin pump, and a medical ID bracelet, I should just wear a big sign saying "Yes, I am diabetic... now can we all shut up and get on with the rest of our lives?" I have 1 person ask me about my med-id braclet today (which doesn't actually look like a med-id, but whatever), two ask me about my insulin pump, and at least another ask me why I was loosing my mind (dontcha love low blood sugars?) Of course people want to know if it hurts. Humans seem to have a morbid fascination with anything abnormal, or slightly gory (eg blood testing or fetal pigs in large glass jars...). So, its only natural that people ask. But, it does DRIVE YOU CRAZY... especially since after they find out, people assume you want to talk about it (and no, the only people i regularly discuss my diabetes with in depth are my doctor, and a few close friends...) yeh i was in hospital, and taking my levels idon't take my levels in the right places on my fingers because after pricking urself so many times oviously ur fingers are going to go harder and the nurse goes your ment to do it there you know and i said how do you expect me to do it where i am ment to when i have calises where ur suppose to do it. yeh i know nurses have a medical knowledge but thats all they have they don't have the personal experience, same as when i was in hospital and they said they where going to put my insulin in the fridge and i said no because it hurts more when its cold and she turned around and said no it doesn't its ment to be in the fridge i asked if she was a diabetic she said no and i said well i am and i know the difference i don't want my insulin in the dam fidge because it hurts It all depends on the question...the worse thing I had experienced was when I was insulin-dependent (not anymore), I was sorta late for my injection& when I got into a public restroom to do the deed, all the stalls were occupied. So I had to take out my kit and prep myself for the injection right then and there. This mother came in with her two children...she quickly ushered them out before they could really see what I was doing...then she bitches me out for shooting up in a public bathroom!! I was like 'wtf??'... Since that happened, if I have to test myself...I seek total privacy or I just hang in there and wait. As for the questions, if it is a person just genuinely concerned and needing correct info, I will gladly educate them. If it is someone just being a pain in the ****...I just blow them off. Sounds rude, I know...but it is my disease on no one else's. Hang in there sweetie..believe it or not, it does get easier with time!! |
