My eight year old neice wa just diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes...? |
can anyone give me some dos and don'ts for when I watch her. Like what she can have and can't have. Most important is to find out what diet her md prescribed. Depending on how severe her diabetes is she will have to take shots 1 to 4 times a day. Her diet is just as important as the shots. It is also important to know what her sugar level is before eating which can be monitored by a glucose monitor. Always good to have sugar tablets found in any drug store on hand. If her sugar is a little low this will help raise it. Since she was just diagnosed, it is best to stick to the md diet as they are probably still regulating her insulin. Things to watch out for is if she starts slurring her words, is very sleepy, if these things are happening her sugar is getting low. Test her, if she is too low, raise her sugar level by eating fruit, candy bar, sugar tablets, juice (natural sugar is the fastest and best way to raise her level quickly). If her levels are too high, activity, or a shot when she gets to know her body are best, but not food. I have even put sugar into juice to raise the levels quickly. In the beginning it is most difficult as their body is still getting regulated and she is figuring out if old enough or mom if she's young, what she can eat and how much insulin. There is a rough rode ahead but its a workable disease and she can still live a long and happy life. Source(s): I had a husband with juvenile diabetes and did a research paper in college on it of which I received an A. im sorry to hear and sorry to say i cant nor can anybody else say wat they can n cant hace the only way to find these out is to ask the doctor that done the diagnosis or ya local gp (because everyone is different with this illness) Be careful that she does not develop hypo glycemia or reduction in blood sugar level due to lack of food or excessive dose of insulin. Elivira summed it up quite nicely. Something else to think of, however, is if she can give her own shots, can she test her own glucose? Check with her parents, and ask them if there is anything special you'll need to do. Since she was just diagnosed, she'll probably need to have a small snack (like a piece of bread and an apple) in between meals. I'm sure her parents will fill you in with a lot of information before they drop her off. Also, if she is having a low blood sugar (depending on how severe) start by giving her the glucose tablets and about 6-8 oz of juice. Wait about 5 to 10 minutes and check again. If it's still not coming up, give her some more juice and either some animal crakcer or graham crackers with peanut butter. That should raise her levels and keep them fairly steady. Give it time, don't just force feed her until she gets better. That could result in higher blood sugars later on. I'm sure everything will be ok. Just remember not to panic or get upset. Your neice is going through a rough time, and needs calm, rational adults to help lead her through. I've been diabetic for 12 years now, and have been a councelor at a diabetes camp for 4 years. anything that is a meat is a free food cheese is a free food something u can give with no worries find out her carb intake at meals make sure she tests her sugar if u have any questions feel free to im me just let me know u have a diabetic in the family my son was diagnosed at 9 hes 12 now its a big blow but if taken care of properly its no big deal |
