I need to know how insulin resistance affects someone with type 2 diabetes? |
i have the diabetes first and now i being tested for insulin resistance and i also have cirrohsis of the liver. its getting harder to concentrate these days . There are two types of diabetes mellitus: type 1(insulin dependent DM) and Type 2(non-insulin dependent/adult onset DM). There are 2 metabolic defects that characterizes type 2 DM: a) derangement in the cells that secrete insulin and b) a decreased response of peripheral tissues to respond to insulin (INSULIN RESISTANCE). In insulin resistance, there is reduced responsiveness of peripheral tissues to insulin. This resistance maybe due to a decrease in number of insulin receptors in the tissues (e.g. muscles and fats) or the post receptor signaling of insulin is impaired. Insulin resistance results in: 1) the inability of circulating insulin to properly direct the deposition of glucose and 2) a more persistent hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels) and 3) more prolonged stimulation of pancreatic B-cells (cells that produce insulin). Actually, insulin resistance is one of the causes of type 2 DM!
