Did you know there was a difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

I have type 1 and it really offends me when people think I have type 2. they are really very different.

I'm with you. See my question on this exact subject.

Peachy, I see your point regarding other diseases that people may know nothing about, but I think my issue and probably this poster's issue as well is not that people do not know about my condition, it is the fact of everything that they "think" they know about diabetes. Any time that I tell someone about my condition, I specifically state I have type 1 diabetes. More often than not people then start ranting off unsolicited advice about diets, herbs, cures, etc. that may be good advice for a type 2, but have nothing to do with my condition. That is where it is frustrating. I doubt many fibromyalgia or Morgellons patients have to deal with that on a daily basis.
as i said to "Anita", there are genetic determinants of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. stop acting like you're better than others because you have "type 1" diabetes. you are not. you are a waste of insulin.

well that is people for u
type one is hereditary.
type two is just a mutation of the insulin and sugar levels.
type three is given at birth

im pretty dang sure thats right.
if it offends you - then all you have to do is explain the two different kinds of diabetes to whomever is offending you.
Type one diabetes is insulin dependent. It is often called juvenile diabetes, because it is most commonly diagnosed in the years between 8 - 16. It is due to irreversible damage of the pancreas, which delivers the insulin to the bloodstream. Its affects cannot be controlled by diet, but diet does effect the body's requirement of insulin. Injections are needed.

Type two is usually refered to as late onset diabetes, usually diagnosed in later life, but is becoming more prevalent in younger people, due in part to the obesity epidemic. The person with type two may be insulin dependent but is more likely to be diet/medication controlled. The person's body becomes immune (or unresponsive) to the effects of insulin.

Type one is at this stage, irreversible. The person is unable to change their condition, and requires medication for life.
Type two, in its early stages, can be reversed, and managed with diet and lifestyle changes.

I have a cousin and a niece with type one, and my parents are both type two.

Hope this helps, B
