What can I do for my mom ? She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? |
She is always tired and feeling weak. I know to give her oj when she has a spell, but what are some signs that she needs medical attention right away? She breaks out in sweats all the time, and I want to help her, but I don't know how. Any and all info would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!! First of all it shows that you love your Mom very much, you are here asking for help on how to help her! Your a great and awesome daughter! I just wanted to tell you that because it is true and you should be told. Now as for your Mom, most important is hug her alot, Mom's like hugs... when she has sweating spells, you can turn on a fan and point it towards her and just above the heigth of her head. The cool air will settle on her. You should also talk with her doctor that diagnosed her to see what to expect and get advice from her doctor on what you can do to help her be more comfortable. Her doctor will know more about her situation and what she needs and when you would need to get her to the hospitial. Give her a lot of love and support. Your on the right path by asking for help, I commend you for that! Help her by partcipating in the required lifestyle changes. This will improve your health too. Read and learn and encourage her to do likewise. Start here: http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes.... Get her to walk with you. Every day!!!! Even if it's short walks. The body needs exercise to improve the usage of the glucose that isn't being used properly now. If she is overweight, the exercise is even more crucial...even a ten percent body weight loss would help her A1c test a lot....I was feeling like she was....I go workout at Curves for women almost everyday....and that and Weight Watchers have been a sheer godsend for me....I am not out of diabetes danger...but it's a LOT better for me... What you can do is to get her medically evaluated. Get the baselines tests like Fasting blood sugar level Random blood sugar level Urine Test Blood Urea Nitorgen (To check renal function, as diabetes effect the kidneys as well) Blood Cholesterol Now you can see what treatment she needs. Get a physician who examins her at least 3 monthly. Do keep an eye on her eyesight, and get an ophthalmologist checkup. Diabetes is the second most common cause of Blindness. For you, you can get her healthy and balanced diet, regular excercise, a check on her blood sugar level, relieve her depression. talk to her about this disease. Make her adopt a healthy life style. Tell her to keep herself hydrated. Take good care of her feet or any injury she gets. Breaking out in sweats may indicate hot flushes, if your mother is menopausal age. She needs supportive treatment. the best advice I can give you is to get online & read read read...there is a world of info out there on diabetes!! The sweats are more than likey due to hypoglycemia(low blood sugar) and need the same attention as on eof her spells.....sugar, like Oj, regular soda, etc etc....... When she goes into a sweaty spell sugest for her to check her blood sugar then you will know FOR SURE what action needs to be taken. I have had diabetes(Type1) for 18 years and I have learned that just like in life everyone is different. Everyone has sugar reactions but sometimes the symptoms arent quite the same as other peoples. If she was just diagnosed, there is going to be a period of uncertainity & trial & error while her & her doctor get her meal/medication/diet/exercise requirements figured out so the best thing you can do is be educated!!! Also be sure shes keeping good track of her blood sugar readings, this is really the most accurate way to know whats going on in her body & what she needs. Shes going to need to adjust her diet, exercise plan, pretty much her whole way of going about thigns so the best you can do is try to help her in the process of learning a new life style. LIke I said get on line just search "diabetes", "diabetes lifestyles" ..taht type of thing & get reading.....education will be on e of the best thigns you can have to help your Mom. If your old enough ask your Mom if its alright to go to her Dr aptmnts w her to talk to her Dr & ASK HIM QUESTIONS!!! All the questions you have , thats what he's there for, he should be more than happy to answer them to help out his patient!!! Good luck & if you want to contact me you can, Im not Type 2 but Ive lived w diabetes for a very long time! :D why don't u ask yr mum to try Chinese medicine. Sometime it works. By the way, all the best to yr mum. You should stop her suguar and consult a homeopath. Many medicine are availbale for the purpose. |
