Do you think I am taking to many medicines for having type 2 diabetes?

I am taking metaformin three times a day before each meal, and actos once a day. 500mgs for the metaformin and 30mgs for the actos.

Hello..I'm an internist and am happy to answer your question...Metformin is the most common oral agent for type 2 diabetes at present..Most patients take anywhere from 1000 to 2000mg per day...Actos is another commonly prescribed medication and you are on a standard dosage of 30 mg daily...You are certainly not on too much medication depending on your overall blood sugar control...Many patients take much more depending on the circumstances...FYI there is a combination of metformin and actos in the same pill called actosplusmet that can simplify the number of pills you take and might be cheaper than taking them separately as you are doing..Hope this helps

Take care

This is something only your doctor can answer.

No. Both of these medicines work differently in your body. Many diabetics take many more drugs.
Hi Mickey
I have Type 2 as well. 1500 mg Metformin is pretty normal. I havnt heard about Actos. Also, make sure you get regular lab works done.
It probably depends on how in or out of control your blood sugar levels are. My husband takes 500mg of Metformin twice a day to keep his levels under control. It's probably like people who have to take more than one type of medicine for high blood pressure when just one isn't doing the job.
For those metformin users, prolonged use can cause damage to the kidneys. FYI, those people with diabetes are predisposed to have kidney disease. You can mention this to your doctor in your next visit. Another FYI, one of the leading cause of kidney disease in the US is diabetes.
