What different disorders are increasing, to your knowledge, in the USA besides autism and diabetes type 1 & 2? |
Please answer if you have personal knowledge that can add to the list. Obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease for example. However, I don't think cancer is on this list, which is good news. The rates of many mental illnesses and neurological disorders are increasing, such as depression, Alzheimer's, autism and ADHD. However, mental retardation is not one of them. Actually, as autism rates have risen, mental retardation rates have decreased. Many of these increases are due to greater awareness among the public, the diagnostic categories being changed or widened, and greated access to health care. In addition, people are living longer than ever before, and therefore, they are living with more disorders and diseases than ever before. However, one thing that is not discussed in the media as much is the interaction between disorders, medications and side effects. For instance, many medications CAUSE high blood pressure... or let's say if you are diagnosed with depression and given medication that makes you gain weight, then you may become obese (by a medical definition, which is a BMI 30 and over). I think this kind of thing happens much more than is currently understood, and that more scientific research needs to be done on this. Source(s): Lic. Psychologist Obesity cerebral Palsy and a multitude due to the IVF programs, as well as mental retardation due to the vaccination schedules for babies heart disease, renal failure, mental disorders,allergies,cancers,ge... disorders, and high blood pressure... More people go to the doctor than ever before, yet more people have diseases and disorders than ever before. Disorders are increasing exponentially - schizophrenia and bipolor disorder are at an all time high, as are obesity, heart disease, etc. There was a very interesting article in a recent "Discover" magazine discussing autism. The consensus of all of the contributors for that article is that the incidence of autism is not increasing in the United States. The apparent increase is the result of a couple of factors. Obviously, there is better diagnosis criteria than there has been in the past. This makes the identification of autistic traits more accurate. The second is a recognition of what the authors referred to as the "Autistic spectrum". This spectrum allows for a diagnosis of autism related conditions that were at one time not recognized as autistic. This broader definition of autistic related conditions creates a larger number of individuals that are diagnosed with autism, but the actual number of cases overall has not significantly increased. |
