Is there any sugar-free and/or carbohydrate-free candy that is suitable for diabetes patients? |
Is there any sugar-free and/or carbohydrate-free candy that is suitable for diabetes patients? Sugar free candies use sugar alcohols...you'll see them as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, to name a few. Some people have no significant rise in their glucose when eating these artificial sweeteners, others will count half the sugar alcohol carbs. The problem with these sweeteners is that can cause diarhea and in fact mannitol is even sometimes used as a laxative for children. Anything over say 20 grams of it will cause problems for most people. Some people are more sensitive than others. I prefer to eat the real thing...in moderation, included in my total carb count, and forget the sugar alcohols used in most sugar free candies. Of course it means that you can not eat as much and I know that is what you're going for, quantity. there are other candies and sweets that are being made with sucralose/Splenda is becoming more popular in some candies but are hard to find. Another problem is that reduced carbs is not always reduced caloricly and might actually be a lot higher. That could be a problem with the quantity issue too. Also...one of those sugar alcohols used, xylitol, was on last night news. Seems it's a poison to dogs. I know I'm different than a dog...but something that kills my dog is not something I want to eat! YES! Look in your local food store candy department and they will have a section of diabetic candy. My husband was just diagnosed with diabetes and he loves sweets. We both eat this now (so I don't keep regular around the house) and I cannot tell the difference. And, I am picky! yes there is . Leonidas, a belgian company, sells it in florida .Belgian chocolate with maltitol . La maison des chocolats ,941 330 2552 Maltitol is a natural sweetner from Barley No, I'm sorry. Yup, but it tastes nasty. Yeah, it's always near the prescription things/bank area/diet pills in a grocery store. I always stare at them when my mom's filling a prescription. You can get normal kinds, like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Also, if you go to The Sweet Factory, they have a sugar free section and they usually do have sugar free sections in most candy stores. Ther's a lot out there. In fact Russel Stover's and Hershey have their own line of candy. Try looking in the candy aisles at your local drugstore (Long's , Walgreens, ...etc. ) The key is not to over indulge because then they are just as bad for you as the regular ones. |
