What percentage of people with Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) end up getting type 2 diabetes? That's a toughie... no one seems to know. What is known is that people, who have IGT and get on a healthy low fat diet and exercise program, do not become diabetic. I would say that the vast majority, however, do become diabetic because few people, in this country, seem to care or be as passionate about this as me. Type 2 diabetes is more a disease of ignorance than anything else. I'd be willing to bet that more people think diabetes is caused by sugar than by fat. Heck, I'd bet that few doctors even know that it's caused by fat. People who are on a low fat diet combined with daily exercise, rarely become diabetic. Here's the best I could find for you: http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-statist... Here's another pertinent article, but it still doesn't answer your question. Apparently IGT figures haven't been taken long enough to draw any significant conclusions: http://www.niddk.nih.gov/patient/dpp/dpp... Suffice to say, that if something isn't done and this penchant for eating unhealthy food and sitting around watching TV doesn't cease, the numbers aren't going to get any lower. Hope you're asking as an outsider. If you're an IGT patient, take heed... it's not too late. If you're diabetic, read my diabetes info page for some helpful tips: http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/type... |
