What happens if I accidently hit a vein while giving myself my insulin injection for diabetes? |
This morning I was giving my shot in my tummy on the fat part and when I remvoed the needle, a huge drip of blood came out. That's never happened before. What if I accidently hit a vein? Will I be ok? If you're okay enough to type on here, you are okay. It just got it your system faster, and might cut the peak down a bit. Just check your sugar a little more frequently today if you think you really got your vein. Please add me to your will. you'll be fine. Blood droplets are normal. There's no real danger of doing any damage to a vein. Relax. I've been doing it for 13 years. If you are taking Regular insulin and it is accidentaly injected into the vein you should be o.k. However, it is the ONLY insulin that can be injected directly into your veins. Sometimes when you give an insulin shot a small amt. of blood may be expelled. It is due to the technique of the shot and you may have nicked something on the way out. Usually not devastating. If you are writing this now I think you are o.k. Try to get into the fatty tissues of your stomach , and outer part of our arms. Stay away from anything that resembles a vein and you should be o.k. You will probably bruise there but I've hit many veins and been OK. That is why you should be careful next time to try to withdraw the plunger before injecting the insulin once you are in the skin. This will tell you if you are inside a blood vessel if blood comes out of the syringe with the insulin because you should not directly inject insulin into your blood vessel. it's not uncommon for that to happen.. u will more than likely get a gross purple bruise for a few days but thats the worst of it.. next time u go to give urself a shot make sure that u pink the skin it moves the veins down and just gives u fleshy tissue |
