What is the best way to feed a child who is 4 yeras old with diabetes?

A diet for a child with diabetes is the same as a healthy diet for anyone, but you need to consider how their insulin is working to understand what they should and shouldn't eat.

If they are 4 they are probably taking 2 injections a day? If so, the activity of their insulin will peak at meal times so it is important that they eat at the right times. Depending on the dose of insulin they are on, they will probably also need snacks about half way between meals, but this will be obious from their blood sugars (ie. if they are often low they will need a snack). Try to go for low sugar foods and things like whole grains as these will keep their blood sugars relitively stable.

If your child has just been diagnosed you can get really overloaded with information and it can all seem really bewildering to start off with. Take your time to learn about these things and try not to worry about asking your diabetes drs etc. at the hospital heaps of questions as this is what they are there for. Your hospital might also be able to get you in touch with local parent groups, or failing that diabetes uk run great family support weekends where you can get together with other partents and have a chance to ask heaps of questions! DUK's website is v difficult to find your way around, but try:

Diabetes is more of a way of life than a medical condition and it takes time to get to know how best to deal with it. Once you get the hang of it it will seem more normal and you will deal with it without thinking about it too much for most of the time. Just keep reading and learning and honestly soon you'll know more than most drs! A popular book is "type 1 diabetes in children, adolesents and young adults" by Dr Hanas. The American Diabetes Association is a good site and has good info. and books, check out: http://www.diabetes.org/for-parents-and-...
When you're reading watch out for the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes!

I hope that helps for a start - good luck xxx Source(s): I have type 1 diabetes myself and run a parent support group for parents and carers of children with diabetes in my local area.

see a dietitian if you want to know anything about feeding a diabetic child. This is serious and not something for strangers to advise you on.
