I am diabetic, two months ago I was diagnosed I started with advandamet for type 2 diabetes I went to my doc? |
yesterday I had gained 10 pds in 1 month which I was really mortified with this I cut back on lots of the bad food I started walking daily 40-1 hr walks. I told the doc its probably the meds she said no I never gained so much weight like this I was 167 for a long time, She now changed me to avandia she said my sugars are still high, Please tell me what is wrong. There are several studies out recently that say that Avandia is very bad and can cause health problems. One of the problems with diabetes is that you seem to eat 'round the clock. Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner , snack. That is not necessary anymore when you learn to count carbs. Please see an dietitian, a diabetes educator and a great Endocrinologist. Educate yourself and you control your diabetes with the help of your medical team. Good luck Source(s): diabetes for 20+ yrs Some of the meds do make you gain weight. The avandia website even tells you that "Avandia can cause your body to keep extra fluid, which leads to swelling and weight gain". I hope your doctor referred you a nutritionist to help you manage your diet and maintain your FBS to less than 100 and HgBA1c to less than 8. Additionally you can ask for a endocrine consult. Endocrinologist is a specialist in treating DM. If these terms are not familiar to you then you should also ask your physician to refer you to a diabetes educator. Treatment of DM is for the long term, uncontrolled sugars can lead to diabetic eye damage, kidney disease, nerve damage and more. This not a disease that is treated with just a pill. This disease requires life style changes and frequent monitoring. If one med is not working then another med should be added or even insulin. Please ask to see an endocrinologist. HbA1c should be less than 7.0. 7.0. |
