Why don't more drivers bike to work and slim down instead of getting fatter and getting diabetes and strokes? |
100,000,000 drive alone to work every day. 45,000,000 of them are in areas with air problems. 30,000,000 of those are overweight and would like to lose weight. 15,000,000 of those people are driving second cars and are in easy biking distance of their jobs. If half of those people tried biking, it would make commute times shorter -- and lessen energy consumed and air quality damage for everyone. So what's the deal? (1) Cargo space. Many people carry varying amount of stuff with them to and from work. (2) Protection from weather. (3) Convenient parking vs. security risks. A bike is way easier to steal than a car. (4) Possible damage to business attire. Shall I go on, or do you get the point? For plenty of people, biking is just not a reasonable option. Quit picking on us! i personally work over 60 miles from my office, and need to be dressed in business attire when I arrive. Biking is obviously not an option for a number of reasons. I would love to. But it is not possible. I go to school - 30 minute drive from my house. Then some days I go to work - 45 minute drive from my house. Then I go to my boyfriend's house - 30 minute drive from school or my house. (These times are WITHOUT traffic! And just about double with...) I just don't have 6 hours a day to ride a bike to where I'm going! I live in in the 'burbs and commute - as do many other Americans! |
