I am pre-diabetic. What kind of diet and nutrician program do I need to follow in order to avoid diabetes?

Do I need to avoid sugar completely?
What are some specific foods that work in my new diet?
Any additional advice on living with and coping with pre diabetes would be appreciated?

I would suggest doing so, yes. Sugar is taboo when you are pre-diabetic. I recommend cutting out all "white" foods, i.e., white rice, white bread, potatoes and corn. Switch to brown rice (which is pretty tasty), wheat or multigrain bread. Stay away from sodas and drink plenty of water.

Wouldn't hurt to incorporate exercise in your daily living.
It would be a good idea to limit your sugar intake not cut out completely. If your able cut out completly do!! I just know I couldn't!!!!Make sure you excersize everyday and drink lots of water!
I m prediabetic ever since I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter. I need to lose some weight that would help too!!!
The diabetic diet I am on is low carb basicly.. not as low as say Atkins..
If male you are allowed upto 5 carb exchanges per meal.. preferable 4..
Women it is upto 4.. preferable 3..
for three meals per day..
so 15 max exchanges for men
12 max for women
....
Each exchange is 15 grams of carbohydrate.. in high fiber foods such as nuts, grains etc.. you deduct the fiber grams from the carb grams..
say nuts with 6 grams carbs.. 4 grams fiber would be 2 grams carbs..
The biggest no nos are Pasta, potatos, sauces, gravies..
It takes some time to get used to but its pretty easy to follow most days..
You can have a little goodie if you count the exchanges..
I am on meds for diabetes and its a pain in the butt.. so if you have the opportunity to nip it in the bud before you get to this point or even worse.. insulin.. do it!! for yourself, for your family..
I didn't for a long time.. went undiagnosed.. I am now legaly blind in one eye.. have numb hands and feet ( neuropathy ) from complications.. I didn't find out about diabetes until I was literaly passing out and my family finaly insisted I go to a doctor.. my blood glucose levels were up over 500.. could of died..
So take it serious.. do the exchanges and it will work..
I am in control now but cannot reverse the nerve damage that has been done..

Also.. call your local hospital most offer diabetes ed classes.. the one here it was like 1000.00 if you went during the day.. but totaly free for the evening class.. so ask about that as well..
You have to limit ALL carbs not just sugar..
Good luck to you and if you have more questions feel free to email me anytime..
Peace

P.S. when you do the exchanges you will notice you WILL lose weight and if your overweight that is going to help you a lot..
